Laurene Powell Jobs, Larry Sonsini, other Valley titans back media startup

www.ozy.com

A look at Ozy Media, which launches in September.

There's a new media startup in Mountain View, and it has basically lined up a murderer's row of venture backers.

Ozy Media, the brainchild of former MSNBC anchor Carlos Watson, is backed by a who's who of Silicon Valley bigwigs ? Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Steve Jobs; Larry Sonsini, a name partner at the Valley legal powerhouse Wilson Sonsini; mega-angel Ron Conway; Chegg's Dan Rosensweig; and Google General Counsel David Drummond.

Aside from the name and the backers, not a whole lot is known about Ozy, which launches in September. According to an article in Fortune, Ozy plans to highlight a few in-depth stories a day, focused on the needs and interests of the "change generation."

If you're like me, "change generation" sounds like a meaningless buzz phrase, a bit like "Pepsi generation,"and is probably not proscriptive enough to actually tell you anything about the organization, what it will cover and how it will cover it.

I will say that Ozy is taking great pains to appear hip, with a landing page featuring a tattooed 20-something with dyed red hair making what can only be described as an "OMG" face. There's also the marketing spiel in the email they send out when you sign up for their mailing list, which reads a little like something written by a man in his 40s trying to seem like a rad dude to kids in their teens.

It said: "We called, you came. And now? The party begins in earnest. Please confirm your cool kid status."

In my head, I read it in the voice of Poochy from the Simpsons.

If Ozy wants to seem like the hip new pub for the kids who sit at the cool table, the name is a little weird. It's short for Ozymandius, which is either a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley or a character from the comic Watchmen, depending on how familiar you are with the romance poets of the 19th century.

Google likely to miss with next-gen Nexus 7, may set new Android standard with 'Moto X'

Although it boasts an impressive feature set, Google's second-generation Nexus 7 tablet could be a bust, says one analyst who believes the Internet search giant's real potential lies in the forthcoming "Moto X" handset.

Google on Wednesday unveiled the next-generation Nexus 7, a tablet that brings impressive hardware to the table for a relatively cheap entrance fee, but KGI Securities' analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates shipments will be markedly below market consensus.

In a pair of research notes obtained by AppleInsider, Kuo says a survey of the tablet industry suggests shipments of the new Nexus 7 will be between 3.5 and 4 million units in 2013. Market watchers, on the other hand, forecast shipments some 30 to 40 percent higher at 5 to 7 million units over the same period.

The analyst cites an increasingly competitive marketplace as being a major factor in the Nexus 7's success. As an example, Apple during its quarterly earnings call on Tuesday announced a 14 percent year-over-year slip in shipments for its best-selling iPad lineup, the first slowdown ever for the June quarter.

Kuo also attributes possibly poor Nexus 7 shipments to a lack of innovation on the part of Google and partner manufacturer Asus.

"While the second-generation Nexus 7 showcases Retina display and wireless charging, among other features, the user experience is little changed as compared to other Android tablets," Kuo writes. "It is also more expensive due to higher component costs. These factors are leading to below-consensus shipments."

Asus itself could negatively impact Nexus 7 sales, as the Taiwanese firm's already low-cost tablets will likely be further marked down to clear inventory during the third quarter. Kuo estimates price cuts averaging 20 to 40 percent, exacerbating the situation for Google's as-yet-unreleased tablet.

If Kuo is bearish on the Nexus 7, he is anything but with Motorola's upcoming Moto X flagship handset. The analyst adjusted his shipment forecast for the smartphone to 5.5 million units for fiscal 2013, up from a previous model of 3.5 million units.

Reported leaked Moto X press shots. | Source: The Verge
Google's Motorola is widely expected to announce the Moto X at a special media event on August 1, with the smartphone said to carry a 4.5-inch 326PPI screen, 5-megapixel camera, and "always-listening" voice recognition mode.

Launching on all carriers, and to backed by a reported $500 million marketing campaign, the U.S.-made device is viewed as a legitimate competitor to Samsung's Galaxy S4 and Apple's iPhone 5. Kuo believes the Moto X will be the "single most important" product for for Motorola in 2013, forecasting the handset to account for 40 percent of the company's smartphone shipments despite being handicapped by a second-half launch.

The analyst sees Moto X as being more a harbinger of things to come than a hot-selling handset, however, noting the opportunity represents chance for Google to set an example for the Android pack. The dominant player in that market is Samsung, but the Korean tech titan could be usurped if Google continues to churn out halo devices like the Moto X.

"With hardware, software, and services converging as a trend, Google is expected to shift more resources into hardware," Kuo says. "By integrating hardware and software to speed up innovation and by launching new flagship models, Google could come to be regarded as a beacon of superior product design in the chaotic Android camp."

VISIT FLORIDA plans to introduce Florida Specialist online training programme in India

Tuesday, July 23, 2013, 13:00 Hrs??[IST]

Conducts maiden FAM trip for Indian travel trade

After appointing AVIAREPS as its India Representative in August last year, VISIT FLORIDA has been focusing on tapping the Leisure and MICE segments. The tourism board is promoting the destination around its new campaign, ?Must be the Sunshine,? which was launched earlier this year, and plans to increase awareness about the destination and product knowledge among the Indian travel trade. The tourism board organised its maiden FAM trip for Indian travel agents recently, and also plans to introduce its Florida Specialist online training programme for the travel trade in India. ?

seldon_tenzing.jpg ?It is too early to give a time frame for the launch of the online training programme but it is certainly part of the initiatives that are in the pipeline for the Indian market. The existing Florida Specialist online training programme for various markets will be specially adapted for the Indian market. The travel trade is our strongest selling partner in the market and our efforts are focused on increasing their destination and product knowledge,? stated Seldon Tenzing, Account Director-India, VISIT FLORIDA.

She added that while Florida with its world-class theme parks, beautiful beaches, entertainment, culinary and shopping options, has always been an attractive travel proposition for Indian families, the tourism board is emphasising on showcasing Orlando, Miami and Space Coast which includes Kennedy Space Centre. These destinations were showcased to representatives from Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. Mercury Travels, Kesari Travels, Saltours International and Vacation Exotica on the seven-day FAM trip. The objective was to enhance awareness and update the participants on Florida and its offerings. The group visited Miami for three nights, spent one night at Cocoa Beach with a day visit to the Kennedy Space Centre and three nights in Orlando. The trip included visits to exciting theme parks such as Sea World, Universal Studios and Walt Disney World in Orlando and other attractions in Miami such as the Bayside Cruise and Jungle Island.

visit_florida.jpgTalking about the initiatives to be undertaken during this fiscal year, Tenzing said, ?We will plan another trade FAM and will be participating in the Brand USA India Mission in September 2013 and combine it with a VIP signature event in Mumbai. Apart from this we will continue our ongoing effort of conducting sales calls in different cities and engage the travel trade through seminars and training events.? Apart from Mumbai and Delhi, our primary markets, we are also tapping other cities. In the past six months we conducted seminars, training programmes and sales calls in cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh and Hyderabad. We also participated as Visit Orlando in the Delhi VUSACOM chapter event and plan to work closely with the VUSACOM Committee on future events,? informed Tenzing.

Nagsri Prasad Shashidhar, Head Outbound, Mercury Travels

?Florida is a favourite with families and almost all age groups, and it was a fantastic step to organise the first India FAM. The trip was ??funtabulous" and exposed us to the variety of attractions apart from theme parks that it is famous for. Miami, South Beach, Florida Keys, Orlando, Space Coast, Port Canaveral, etc., are fantastic with super ideas for honeymooners, families and MICE groups too. A 12-night stay in Florida alone is also not enough to explore this vibrant place with all its shopping and eateries, apart from the wonderful sights and sounds.?

Ramnath Mallya, Senior Manager, Leisure Travel, Products, Thomas Cook (India) Ltd

?Florida is indeed the playground of US. From the sun-kissed beaches of Miami and Coco Beach, world-class theme parks, national parks etc. to some of the most sought after cruise destinations, shopping, dining, it has everything to offer a fun loving tourist. The FAM trip had a well planned itinerary. The USPs of Florida includes wide range of accommodation from budget to super luxury, varied entertainment for all age groups and good weather for most part of the year, making it a perfect holiday destination.?

Seton fundraiser held at golf course

NORTH BEND, Ohio - Golfers know it's a big deal to get a hole in one. And on Monday, And on Monday, Some Seton High School supporters hoped for the chance to earn more than bragging rights at Aston Oaks Golf Club.

The school's athletic association hosted its fourth annual golf fundraiser.? This fundraising event was served with a twist; competitors needed a touch of fate and luck to win.?? Women and men were able to tee it up during the competitive, yet charitable cause.

Members of the community purchased a golf ball for $5 each with an assigned number. Firefighters climbed their work truck ladder and dropped 3,000 balls, from the sky, and all at once. The winner would have to make it on the hole, or come close to claim the grand prize.

"It's rare that one makes it in that close, but if they do it they get $1,000," said Seton Athletic Booster President Joe Moehring. The ball farthest away from the intended target also got a prize of $250.

Rain may have delayed the festivities for almost 20 minutes, but Mother Nature didn't deter the golfing enthusiasts.

"It's a great day to be here, great turnout, but it's a serious thing we're trying to do, trying to raise funds for student athletes on the field."

Moehring said proceeds from the fundraiser will help student athletes them with pay-to play fees.? This year, he said the organization raised more than $40,000.

Hunter Wolcott right behind leader Tim Jackson in Choo-Choo golf tournament

Hunter Wolcott has a chaperone this week for the Choo-Choo Invitational golf tournament, and it's somebody other than his father.

It's his older brother, Ben.

The Wolcotts are playing in their first tournament as brothers without parental supervision away from their home in Burns, Tenn., about 45 minutes west of Nashville.

"It's fun but it's exhausting," said Ben, who will be a freshman on the Ole Miss golf team in a few weeks. "He looks 21, he hits it 20 yards past me, but sometimes I have to remember he's still just 15 years old.

"He looks to me as a role model, so I have to walk a straight line."

Ben Wolcott tied for fifth at the Magnolia Amateur last week, tied for 12th at the Spirit of America two weeks ago, and he's alone in second after the first round of the Choo-Choo at Council Fire. He shot a 4-under-par 67 -- with the course playing as a par 71 as it did for the NCAA East Regional in 2008 -- and trails Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame member Tim Jackson by one stroke.

Dustin Smith of Nashville is in third place at 68 in the inaugural event that awards points toward the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

Hunter Wolcott is tied for 31st after a 76 with two rounds remaining.

"I putted unbelievable," said Ben Wolcott, who had 28 putts and made seven birdies. "I'd been working on my game a lot, and it started to show at the Spirit and then it carried over to the next week and then today. I've had a little momentum."

And he usually gets the better of his younger -- but not little -- brother.

"I got him once and I let him know that I beat him, and I don't think he liked that," Hunter said. "He'll bring up every other tournament where he beat me."

They're the son of Tunica National general manager Bob Wolcott, who plays in professional events across the state and the Southeast.

"Our parents joke that we were born with a golf club in our hands," Ben joked. "We've played other sports and I gave up basketball. But Hunter is 6-2, so it would be silly for him to quit playing hoops."

Jackson's 66 included a bogey on the 18th hole in his first round at Council Fire since 1994.

"I didn't recognize any of the holes," Jackson said. "There weren't this many houses out here back then."

Geraldo Shares Topless Selfie on Twitter, Internet Goes Crazy

Geraldo Rivera

Geraldo Rivera has been married five times, so he seemed intent on showing just what these women find so irresistible.

Rivera caused quite the stir on the internet when he posted a picture of himself wearing nothing but a towel on his Twitter feed Sunday morning, alongside the caption, ?70 is the new 50. Erica [his wife] and family are going to be so pissed?but at my age??

The photo sent the microblogging site into overdrive, with more than 1,000 retweets.

Perhaps realizing he did some serious visual oversharing, Rivera did the world a service and later deleted the tweet, writing:

?

Which is good advice for anyone, really. Below is the full-size picture behind the frenzy. Look, if you dare.

Brazil buzzing with anticipation for Pope Francis

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Pope Francis lands Monday in a Brazil electric with anticipation for the pontiff's first international trip, heading into the open arms of his home continent where mammoth crowds are expected to celebrate Mass on Rio's Copacabana beach.

The pope is coming to meet with legions of young Roman Catholics converging on Rio for the church's World Youth Day festival, believers whose behavior so far hasn't been typical of the normal tourists in this seaside Sin City known for hedonistic excess.

More than 1 million people are expected to pack the white sands of Copacabana to celebrate Mass with Francis. He also will visit a tiny chapel in a trash-strewn slum, and grassroots Catholics love that he plans a side trip to venerate Brazil's patron saint.

"I'm here for faith! I'm here for joy! And I'm here for the first Latino pope!" Ismael Diaz, a 27-year-old pilgrim wrapped in the flag of his native Paraguay, said as he bounded down the stone sidewalks of Copacabana hours ahead of Francis' arrival.

Diaz gave high fives to four fellow pilgrims, then turned toward local beachgoers who looked on while calmly sipping green coconut water and staring from behind dark sunglasses.

"I'm here because I have the force of God in me and want to make disciples of all. Arghhhhhhhhhh!" he yelled, lifting his head and howling into Rio's hot, humid air before flexing his arms and going into a bodybuilder's pose.

Francis would have an easy time of it if all Catholics shared Diaz's fervor. But Diaz and his fellow pilgrims are the exception to the rule in Brazil and much of Latin America, a region with more faithful than any other in the world but where millions have left the church for rival Pentecostal evangelical churches or secularism.

A poll from the respected Datafolha group published Sunday in the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo said 57 percent of Brazilians age 16 and older call themselves Catholic, the lowest ever recorded. Just six years ago, when Pope Benedict XVI visited, a poll by the same firm found 64 percent considered themselves among the faithful. In 1980, when Pope John Paul II became the first pontiff to visit Brazil, 89 percent listed themselves as Catholics, according to that year's census.

Pentecostal evangelicals stood at 19 percent of the population in the latest poll, rising from virtually nothing three decades ago by aggressively proselytizing in Brazil's impoverished slums.

Beyond the numbers who claim one faith or another is the huge gap in the level of participation in the different churches, a fervor factor that deeply troubles the Catholic Church. The Datafolha poll said 63 percent of Pentecostal evangelicals report going to church at least once a week, while only 28 percent of Catholics say they go to Mass weekly.

Datafolha interviewed 3,758 people across Brazil on June 6-7 and said the poll had a margin error of two percentage points.

In his few months as pontiff, the 76-year-old Francis has demonstrated an easy ability to connect with people, in particular with young Catholics, demonstrating humility and a warmth the faithful feel is genuine. Church leaders hope his Brazil trip will deepen that appeal.

Keeping to his example that the Catholic church must be humble, Francis carried his own black hand luggage as he boarded a special Alitalia flight from Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport on Monday.

"Every pope is different, and Pope Francis is showing himself to be extremely charismatic, with a language that is simple and direct," Sao Paulo Cardinal Odilo Scherer said. "I absolutely think there is renewed happiness within the church that began with the election of Pope Francis."

Fernando Altemeyer, a theologian at the Catholic University of Sao Paulo, said that warmth and understanding is entirely related to Francis being the first pope from Latin America, where he's had more exposure to the harsh realities of life on the continent than European popes of the past.

"It allows him to understand and promote a Catholicism that's felt in the body, that's visceral," Altemeyer said. "That changes a Catholicism that for hundreds of years has been felt more in the mind, that's been a very European Christianity."

All of which gives even more force to a New Evangelization effort that was pushed by John Paul II and picked up steam under Benedict, with the World Youth Day and it's theme of "Go and make disciples of all nations" expressing the desire to more ardently spread the Gospel.

Playing out in parallel to the papal visit is political unrest in Brazil, where widespread anti-government protests that began last month have continued and are expected to take place right outside Rio's Guanabara Palace, the seat of state power where Francis is to meet with President Dilma Rousseff on Monday evening shortly after his arrival.

With the exception of gay rights groups and others angered by the church's doctrine against abortion and same-sex marriages, the target of most protesters won't be Francis but the government and political corruption. The pontiff is said to support Brazilians peacefully taking to the streets, and when he served as a cardinal in Buenos Aires he didn't shy from conflict with Argentina's leaders as he railed against corruption.

The pope will likely avoid hot-button issues like abortion and same-sex marriages while in Brazil, and focus on his message that the church should put its attention on the poor and that clergy must lead a humble life.

Brazil allows abortions only in cases of rape or risk to a mother's life or if a fetus is brainless, and the nation's supreme court in 2011 approved civil unions for same-sex couples. State courts have since allowed those unions to become full-fledged marriages.

The Catholic Church is not as active in politics in Brazil as it is in other Latin American nations, though it strongly opposes any efforts to loosen abortion laws and took part in the legal argument against civil unions when the matter was before the top court.

When Francis talks with Rousseff, they are likely to focus on the poor. Upon taking office, the Brazilian leader declared that eradicating extreme poverty was her top goal as president, and she has expanded a network of social welfare programs that have helped lift almost 30 million Brazilians out of poverty in the last decade.

"The good thing from a social perspective is that he understands the increasing stratification of wealth in Latin America," said Joseph Palacios, a sociologist at Georgetown University and former Catholic priest who has studied the church.

"Unlike his predecessors, who had a theoretical understanding, Francis has a pastoral understanding honed by living and working in working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires. All of his understanding of poverty and other social issues appear to be based on his experiences, not theory or doctrine."

That's evident to Maria Nascimento, a 60-year-old Catholic living in the Varginha slum where Francis will pay a visit this week.

"God chose wisely when he decided to send this humble man to lead the church. He's loved in this community because he's talking about poor people," she said, standing in her kitchen where photos of grandchildren's baptisms were stuck to her refrigerator with magnets.

"There's going to be a huge impact on Brazil after he has come and left, after his feet have walked these streets in our slum. He's going to help the church in Brazil, the love here for him is growing so fast."

'R.I.P.D' gets buried at the box office

Movies

Marking another blow for Hollywood's tentpole strategy, New Line's $20 million horror pic "The Conjuring" raced to a $41.5 million North American debut, while "R.I.P.D." limped to a seventh-place finish despite costing at least $130 million to produce.

"The Conjuring," directed by horror maestro James Wan, did far better than expected and is a major win for New Line and Warner Bros. The R-rated movie, earning an A- CinemaScore, stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as paranormal investigators who help a family terrorized by a dark force. Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor also star.

More from THR: Hollywood's homegrown summer movie crisis

"R.I.P.D.," from Universal, opened to a dismal $12.8 million domestically. Robert Schwentke's action-comedy is the summer's latest big-budget bomb, and stars Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as deceased police officers who must protect the living from evil spirits who refuse to move on. The pic, drawing comparisons to "Men in Black," earned a C+ CinemaScore.

Universal can certainly withstand a financial hit, considering the profits it will earn from "Fast & Furious 6" and "Despicable Me 2." And once the studio saw that "R.I.P.D." was in trouble, it scaled back its marketing spend.

"R.I.P.D." wasn't the weekend's only disappointment as both "Turbo" and "Red 2" underperformed in their domestic openings.

"Turbo," facing an unprecedented glut of animated product, grossed $21.5 million for the weekend to come in No. 3 and $31.2 million for the five-day stretch (it opened on Wednesday). From DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox, "Turbo" marks one of the lowest domestic openings for a DWA title and lost the weekend itself to megahit "Despicable 2."

It is, however, off to a strong start overseas, grossing $22.6 million from 28 international territories representing 25 percent of the marketplace.

"Despicable 2" came in No. 2 in its third weekend, grossing a sensational $25.1 million for a domestic total of $276.1 million.

"Turbo" opens only two weeks after "Despicable Me 2" and four weeks after "Monsters University." Fox is counting on "Turbo" to have strong legs, noting that it received a glowing A CinemaScore and an A+ from moviegoers under age 18.

The film, directed by David Soren and costing $135 million to produce, is about an ordinary garden snail whose dream of racing in the Indianapolis 500 comes true. Reynolds voices the title role; Paul Giamatti, Snoop Dogg, Michael Pena, Maya Rudolph, Michelle Rodriguez and Samuel L. Jackson also lend their voices. DWA is playing up the fact that "Turbo" is an original story.

Photos from THR: 'Pacific Rim' premiere: Big robots bring out big stars

"Red 2" opened to $18.4 million to come in No. 5, not enough to match the $21.7 million opening of "Red" in 2010. Summit made a major gamble in moving the sequel to the summer; "Red" launched in October. The follow-up cost $84 million to produce.

"Red 2's" impressive cast includes Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The movie earned a B+ CinemaScore.

Schwentke directed 2010's "Red," which grossed nearly $200 million worldwide; Dean Parisot is in the director's chair this time.

Sympathy for China airport blast protester

BEIJING - Chinese citizens expressed support on Sunday for a disabled man who set off an explosion at Beijing's international airport, injuring himself in an apparent protest against police brutality.

Chinese security personnel move in to investigate the scene where a man in a wheelchair ignited a home-made explosive device at Beijing's international airport terminal 3 on Saturday, July 20, 2013, injuring himself but no others. (AFP photo)

Messages of support posted online came after reports said 34-year old Ji Zhongxing was driven to the act by a years-long battle for justice after being severely beaten by police.

Wheelchair-bound Ji warned passengers in the airport before detonating the small device late on Saturday in an apparent attempt to draw attention to his case without harming others, the Beijing News reported.

A policeman who rushed to the scene was the only other person injured in the explosion, the state-run China Radio International said.

"He warned those passing by ... what a good member of the public, who in this country is willing to stand up and say they are more righteous than him,"' Zhao Xiao, a professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology wrote on the Twitter-like Sina Weibo site.

"By warning others to move away, he is a good person ... I hope authorities will be understanding, or they will set off a vicious cycle," lawyer Yuan Yulai wrote.

"He was not as crazed as the police who beat him in the first place," another Sina Weibo user said.

Mr Ji moved from the eastern province of Shandong to work as a motorcycle driver in the southern city of Dongguan, where he was severely beaten by police staff in 2005, causing him to become disabled, according to multiple reports which could not be independently verified.

He had "lost all hope with society", following an unsuccessful battle for compensation, Hong Kong broadcaster Phoenix TV reported.

Mr Ji was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital where he had his left hand amputated, the broadcaster said.

Lawyers for Mr Ji could not be reached on Sunday. Phoenix TV said at least one lawyer could not comment due to "pressure" from the local government in Dongguan.

Reports said Mr Ji had grown frustrated at China's "petitioning" system, which allows citizens to file complaints directly with government departments.

Petitioners whose complaints have been ignored have for decades staged protests across China, with some using violent acts to draw attention to their case.

An unemployed man who had been a petitioner killed 47 people last month by setting off an explosion on a bus in the coastal city of Xiamen, state media reported.

Internet users favourably contrasted Mr Ji's decision to warn passengers with the behaviour of the petitioner behind the Xiamen attack.

"It's a big step forward ... because Ji chose to inflict the smallest amount of injury,'' one Sina Weibo user wrote.
