PFT: Move over, NFC West -- AFC South is worst

Jacksonville Jaguars Jones-Drew is tackled by Tennessee Titans Ayers and Morgan in NashvilleReuters

As the league tries to improve the protocol for diagnosing concussions during games, the NFL continues to wrestle with a basic reality that exists at every level of the sport.

Football players want to play football.? Thus, they?ll be inclined to try to hide a concussion if it means being allowed to continue to play football.

In a series of 44 Associated Press interviews with current players, 23 of them said they would hide a concussion in order to stay in the game.? Some said they already have.

But more than two-thirds of the players interviewed also said they would like to see an independent neurologist on the sidelines at games.

?They?ve got guys looking at your uniform to make sure you?re wearing the right kind of socks,? Rams safety Quintin Mikell said. ?Why not have somebody there to protect your head?? I think we definitely should have that.?

Mikell also said he has hidden concussions to keep playing, and that he accepts the risks of the life he has chosen.

?I?ll probably pay for it later in my life,? Mikell said.? ?But at the same time, I?ll probably pay for the alcohol that I drank or driving fast cars.? It?s one of those things that it just comes with the territory.?

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew, the NFL?s leading rusher, agreed that he?d hide a concussion in order to keep playing.

?The bottom line is: You have to be able to put food on the table,? Jones-Drew said.? ?No one?s going to sign or want a guy who can?t stay healthy.? I know there will be a day when I?m going to have trouble walking.? I realize that.? But this is what I signed up for.? Injuries are part of the game. If you don?t want to get hit, then you shouldn?t be playing.?

And that captures the essence of the league?s current dilemma.? Most players will assume the risks of concussions in order to keep playing, both in the short term and over the long haul.? But if the league doesn?t do enough to protect them from themselves while they?re playing, some of them will sue the league after their careers end, claiming that the league should have done more.

It should make for interesting arguments as the pending concussion lawsuits unfold, given that the NFL could choose to try to defend itself by developing evidence (likely through expert testimony) that some players who claim that they suffered long-term injuries due to concussions would have hidden concussions, even if the NFL had done more to protect them.? Then again, the former players likely will argue that, if the NFL had been fully candid about the true harm that can be done by head injuries, they would have realized that concussions shouldn?t be hidden.

That said, if more than half of 44 players interviewed at a time when the risks are fully known would still hide concussions, plenty of the players who are now suing the league surely would have hidden concussions, even if the league had better procedures in place before 2009.

Implications for sexual assault prevention: college students as prosocial bystanders.

Source

Department of Human Development, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York 14853-4401, USA. dme56@cornell.edu

Abstract

Prosocial bystander interventions are promising approaches to sexual assault prevention on college campuses.

OBJECTIVE:

To assess bystander attitudes among undergraduate students at a northeastern university.

PARTICIPANTS:

A convenience sample of 188 students from 4 undergraduate classes was surveyed during regularly scheduled class sessions.

METHODS:

Participants completed a short survey on bystander efficacy, readiness to change, and barriers to intervention prior to the start of class.

RESULTS:

The majority of students were not involved in activities or programs focused on sexual assault prevention. Although students agreed that violence could be prevented, they perceived many barriers to their own participation in intervention.

CONCLUSIONS:

There is a need for gender-targeted prevention programming that introduces the idea of prosocial bystander intervention, with a focus on increasing self-efficacy and lowering barriers.

Stress-Free Holidays for Pets | Care2 Healthy Living

The holidays have arrived, and if you are one of the fortunate ones with friends and family that you like to spend time with, the holidays mean parties, dinners, gift exchanges and get-togethers. Whether you will be the host of one of these fetes, or whether you?ll be packing up the family and pet for a cross-town trip to visit family and/or friends, know before you go how you are going to keep everyone calm and comfortable, so that?everyone has a good time.

Visiting ? Visitors

If you are the ?visitee,? you will want to do a little preparation before the guests arrive. Many of us consider our pets to be members of the family, and we enjoy having them with us in as we celebrate good times. But, when our pets are not used to have more than a few people around, they can get overly excited, and things can stop being fun. The jumping, the grabbing food from hands and tables, the barking ? all of these things can lead to some embarrassing situations, and can even frighten some guests who are not accustomed to having animals around. In the weeks before the event, take some time to work on your pet?s manners and reinforce obedience training. You might try some small gatherings with some pet friendly people who can help you to reinforce your pet?s manners, so that when the bigger party night comes, your pet will already be prepared.

If, on the other hand, you know that your pet will not be able to hold back his exuberance, set aside a safe room where he can stay for the duration of the event. Make the space comfortable with a bed or rug, water, toys, and maybe some treats. Close this area off to the guests so that you can be sure that your pet, and your guests, are safe. Remember to either tell your guests that your pet should be left alone, tape a sign to the door saying ?do not open,? or place a hook and eye lock on the door so that people know that it is not to be opened. The last thing you want is for a very excited pet to dash through the house, and possibly out the door to the outside of the house.

Video: Shearing triggers odd behavior in microscopic particles

Friday, December 23, 2011

Microscopic spheres form strings in surprising alignments when suspended in a viscous fluid and sheared between two plates ? a finding that will affect the way scientists think about the properties of such wide-ranging substances as shampoo and futuristic computer chips.

A team of scientists at Cornell University and the University of Chicago have imaged this behavior and have explained the forces causing it for the first time. Its findings appear in the Dec. 19-23 early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"The experimental breakthrough revealed that these string structures were perpendicular to the shear instead of parallel to it, contrary to what many in the field were expecting," said Aaron Dinner, associate professor in chemistry at UChicago and a study co-author.

The experiment was led by Itai Cohen, associate professor of physics at Cornell, who custom-built a device that would enable him simultaneously to exert shearing forces on suspended colloids (the spheres) and image the resulting motion at 100 frames per second with a confocal microscope. Imaging speed was critical to the experiment because the string-like structures appear only at certain shear rates.

"This issue of strings has been pretty controversial. I'm not sure that we've solved all the controversies associated with them, but at least we've made a step forward," Cohen said.

Shearing forces affect the dynamic behavior of paint, shampoo and other viscous household products, but an understanding of these and related phenomena at the microscopic level has largely eluded a detailed scientific understanding until the last decade, Dinner noted.

Futuristically speaking, these forces potentially could be harnessed to produce microscopic patterns on computer chips or biosensors via special paints that flow easily when layered in one direction, but becomes hard when layered in another direction.

Cohen's objective was more scientifically immediate: to devise an experiment that would overcome the technical difficulties associated with measuring the mechanical properties of the colloidal strings while also imaging their formation. "The holy grail is to be able to understand how the structure leads to the mechanical properties and then to be able to control the mechanical properties by influencing the structure," Cohen explained.

This 12-second video shows the formation of particle strings at angles perpendicular to the direction of shear flow. Many scientists had predicted that the strings would form parallel to the direction of shear flow. Experiments at Cornell and computer simulations at the University of Chicago show that the strings form perpendicular to the direction of shear. Credit: Xiang Cheng, Cornell University

Cohen, PhD'01, received his doctorate in physics at UChicago, as did lead author Xiang Cheng, PhD'09, a postdoctoral associate at Cornell who assembled the team; and co-author Xinliang Xu, PhD'07, a postdoctoral scholar at UChicago. The study co-authors also included Stuart Rice, the Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in Chemistry at UChicago and a 1999 recipient of the National Medal of Science.

As members of UChicago's Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, Rice and Dinner are part of a larger effort to determine how materials behave under the influence of various dynamic forces. Some of their physics colleagues analyze forces operating on macroscopic scales, while chemists such as Rice and Dinner attempt to assess how those findings might apply to microscopic phenomena.

Rice and his UChicago co-authors used computer simulations to develop a precise explanation for the string-like colloidal structures that formed in the Cornell experiment. "The previous simulations all left out the consequences of the flow created in the supporting fluid as the particles move, the so-called hydrodynamic forces," Rice said.

"A very large fraction of the work in the field neglects hydrodynamic forces because it's hard. You try and get away with what you can," Rice noted with amusement. "But in this case it turns out that the inclusion of those forces is the crucial element."

The simulations allowed the UChicago team to control various experimental parameters to assess their relative importance. "You can play God," Rice said. "The important finding is the overwhelming role of the lubrication forces and the anti-intuitive result that they create."

The lubrication force comes into play when two colloids come together to behave much like macroscopic ball bearings soaking in a reservoir of goopy fluid.

"Pulling them apart would be working against the fluid and so it would be very hard," Dinner said. "So actually, when you get a collision in these colloidal systems, those lubrication forces hold them together much longer, and that actually allows for some of the unique dynamics that give rise to the structure. That was specifically what the simulations showed."

Xu, the UChicago postdoctoral scholar, adapted a mathematical formula developed by John Brady at the California Institute of Technology to simplify the simulations, which ran for days and weeks at a time. "Every time you rearrange the particles, the interactions are different," Rice said. "If you were to calculate that directly, it would be extremely tedious."

But Xu's adapation of Brady's formula enabled him to generate a table of hydrodynamic interactions that listed each particle configuration. Xu found that he could accurately simplify the simulation by focusing on just two of the experiment's seven layers of colloids.

The simulations and the experiment showed that even after three centuries of study, the field of hydrodynamics continues to yield surprising discoveries. "We are still discovering novel behavior that is fundamentally determined by the hydrodynamics," Rice noted.

Penn St AD: 'Deliberate, measured' coach search (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Penn State may still be without a replacement for fired coach Joe Paterno by the time the Nittany Lions play in the TicketCity Bowl on Jan. 2

The six-person search committee is taking a "very deliberate and measured approach to the process in order to identify the coach that best fits the requirements of the position," acting athletic director Dave Joyner said Thursday in a written statement.

School president Rodney Erickson and Joyner had both said they hoped to have a new coach before No. 24 Penn State's bowl game.

But Thursday, Joyner said a new coach would be introduced "at the appropriate time," and the statement offered no specific timeline.

Erickson was out of town Thursday for the holidays. Spokesman Bill Mahon said Joyner was providing Erickson with regular updates.

"I think they have both emphasized the most important element here is to get the right coach, not speed up the timing of the search," Mahon said. "There is no update on possible timing."

Longtime defensive coordinator Tom Bradley has been running the program on an interim basis since school trustees fired Paterno on Nov. 9 in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno is not a target of an into the Sandusky case by the state attorney general's office, though he was dismissed amid mounting criticism that school leaders should have done more to prevent alleged abuse. Sandusky, who has maintained his innocence, is awaiting trial.

Making a good hire, and soon, is generally seen as a critical step to secure the future of Penn State's storied football program. A couple of recruits have already revoked their commitments to the school in the wake of the Sandusky scandal.

Erickson said earlier this month one of the top criteria in the coaching search is "how that person would fit into the value system of Penn State, which clearly has to be honesty, integrity and commitment to excellence in academics."

According to Joyner, the school "is continuing to talk with individuals that we're interested in and work through the interview process." He called it a "very important hire for Penn State."

Bradley and defensive line coach Larry Johnson are among those who have been interviewed.

Green Bay quarterbacks coach Tom Clements was scheduled to have a phone interview last week, USA Today has reported. At Packers practice Thursday, Clements declined comment on whether he was interested in the job and would not confirm if he had interviewed for it.

Nebraska's Bo Pelini also emerged this week on the seemingly endless rumored list of potential college-level prospects. Pelini after practice Tuesday called the reports irresponsible and untrue, and said he had not interviewed at Penn State.

As for the Nittany Lions, players have gone home for the holidays. They are scheduled to regroup Monday in Dallas to prepare for the bowl game against No. 20 Houston.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? A final coroner's report shows an Ohio man who released dozens of wild animals and then killed himself had no alcohol or illegal drugs in his system.

The Columbus Dispatch reports ( http://bit.ly/saaXlR) that the findings released Wednesday also confirm that 62-year-old Terry Thompson died after he put a gun to the roof of his mouth and fired. And the report indicates he was bitten and clawed by large cats immediately after his Oct. 18 death on his property near Zanesville in eastern Ohio.

Sheriff's deputies were forced to kill 48 loose exotic animals, including bears, lions and endangered Bengal tigers.

Three leopards, two primates and a grizzly bear survived the big-game hunt and are now in the care of the Columbus zoo.

(AP) ? A rating agency's threat to downgrade 15 eurozone countries, including Germany, as well as Europe's bailout fund has added pressure on the region's leaders to find a lasting solution to their crisis at a summit this week.

Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday downplayed Standard & Poor's warnings, but the possibility that a downgrade of eurozone countries could weaken the creditworthiness of Europe's bailout fund complicates the region's fight against the crisis.

The first warning came just hours after Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged changes to the European Union treaty that would centralize decision-making on spending and borrowing for the 17 countries that use the euro. Tighter political and economic coordination among euro countries is seen as a precursor to further financial aid from the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund, or some combination.

The threat to cut Germany's prized AAA rating was particularly surprising. Its bonds are considered among the safest in the world and are the basis upon which Europe finances its bailout fund. S&P warned in a follow-up report that it could cut the AAA rating of Europe's bailout fund by up to two notches if it decides to downgrade one of the eurozone's top-rated countries.

The bailout fund needs the AAA rating to cheaply raise money on markets. Losing it would mean it would cost billions more to fund bailouts, hurting the rescued countries that ultimately have to pay the higher interest rates.

Investors mostly took the S&P warnings in stride on Tuesday. European stocks and bonds held onto the gains they made Monday.

"What a rating agency does is the responsibility of the rating agency," Merkel told reporters in Berlin, refusing to elaborate further.

She said, however, that she expected a meeting of European leaders later this week in Brussels would help restore markets' confidence.

She and Sarkozy on Monday outlined sweeping plans to change the EU treaty in an effort to keep tighter checks on overspending nations. The proposal is set to form the basis of discussions at an EU summit in Brussels on Friday.

The financial markets of Italy and Spain rallied after Merkel and Sarkozy unveiled their proposals, suggesting investor are more confident Europe can survive the crisis.

"I have always said this is a long process and an arduous one and it will continue, but we charted the course yesterday with the French president and we will continue to stay the course," Merkel said.

S&P said there was a 50 percent chance that the countries' ratings it put on review would be downgraded.

Late Monday night the euro fell from $1.3460 to $1.3330, unwinding much of the gains made after Merkel and Sarkozy's proposals. By Tuesday, however, it was back up to $1.3420 ? buoyed in part by a report showing a massive rebound in German industrial orders due to a double-digit increase in demand from eurozone countries.

Stock and bond markets largely overlooked S&P's threat, remaining stable on Tuesday. The bond yields for countries like Italy and Spain remained at the one-month lows they hit on Monday.

"Although the S&P warning has not scared the markets as it was pretty much stating the obvious, it did color the market sentiment," said Anita Paluch, a trader with Gekko Global Markets.

Paluch said the warning does raise pressure on policymakers, however, to use the upcoming summit to produce a solution that will "put out the fire in the eurozone."

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said it appeared to him that S&P had made its decision before Merkel and Sarkozy released details of the new plan, so hadn't been able to factor that into its considerations.

The leaders' proposal is "exactly the response to one of the major questions from the ratings agency, which talks about insufficient European economic governance," Juppe said on RTL radio.

Sarkozy and Merkel are proposing several broad changes for the EU treaty, including the introduction of a penalty for any government that allows its deficit to exceed 3 percent of gross domestic product. The penalty would be automatic ? unless a majority of nations opposed it, a loophole that drew sharp criticism from analysts.

Some analysts also feel the proposal, which demands strict austerity measures, misses the mark and will only worsen much-needed growth in already feeble economies.

Investors are hoping that the summit of European leaders on Thursday and Friday will produce concrete measures to prevent a messy breakup of the euro. Markets have been jittery because of fears that the euro might disintegrate, causing a sharp recession in Europe that would spread through the world economy.

EU spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio said that the bloc needed to make "important decisions this week" but not because of any worries about the S&P ratings.

"The job was already partially done in October" at the last summit, he said. "We now have to complete the job. It is not because we want to please the rating agencies or market forces, it is important because it is the best (way) to ensure the prosperity of our citizens."

The S&P warning left out only two of 17 countries that use the euro: Cyprus, whose bonds have near-junk status, and Greece, whose low ratings already suggest it is likely to default soon anyway.

Mugger left bloodied after attempt on MMA fighter

NBCChicago.com

Chicago police say Anthony Miranda tried to rob an MMA fighter.

?

By NBCChicago.com

CHICAGO -- A convicted felon decided to mug an MMA fighter on the Southwest Side of Chicago, police say, and ended up paying a steep price.

Police did not release the victim's name but said he was able to ward off Anthony Miranda, 24, who ended up with two black eyes and a gunshot wound to the ankle after a tussle.

The victim was sitting in his parked car near 55th St. and Kenneth when Anthony Miranda, 24, walked up to the car asking for a lighter, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

When the victim did not have one, Miranda pulled out a handgun and demanded money, police officials said. He then demanded the victim get out of the car.

At some point, the victim was able to grab control of the gun while Miranda's attention was diverted. The two men wrestled on the ground and during the fight, Miranda accidentally discharged his gun, shooting himself in the ankle, police said.

The victim was able to pin down Miranda until police arrived and later told officials he was a martial arts expert and ultimate fighting champion.

Miranda was taken to Holy Cross Hospital with a face full of cuts and two black eyes, police said. He has been charged with armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm, a class X felony.

Records show Miranda has several convictions, including at least one for a residential burglary. He was ordered held on $350,000 bond Sunday.

Kids With Epilepsy Should Get Screened for Autism, Developmental Delays (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Dec. 5 (HealthDay News) -- Children seen in epilepsy clinics should be screened for development delay and autism because the conditions often occur together, new research suggests.

Researchers at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago asked parents of children under age 5 who had epilepsy to fill out screening questionnaires. The results showed that 75 percent of children also had a developmental delay, while 41 percent had autism.

More than one-third of the children had not been previously diagnosed with either autism or developmental delay, the researchers noted.

The results "support routine screening of both new onset and established cases of pediatric epilepsy," according to the researchers in a news release.

The study is slated to be presented on Monday at the American Epilepsy Society annual meeting in Baltimore. Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

All Critics (50) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (49) | Rotten (1)

If the bummers and ambiguity of some of this season's movies are getting you down - or, hey, just the bummers and ambiguities of life - make your way to Le Havre. You won't be sorry.

The Finnish director's sense of humor is dry and dark as pitch, as he consistently finds moments of absurdity in the midst of strife and tragedy.

Kaurism?ki wrote the script, I think, with secret credit from Mother Goose and some fabric softener.

"Le Havre" is a small bit of movie magic, a story that plays more as a fable even as it deals with something as topical as immigration.

The film is especially comforting if you love old movies, as Kaurismaki does.

Does Kaurismaki believe in his own fairy tale? The movie, a humble delight, suggests the answer is yes.

Kaurismaki's movie about a shoeshine man and an illegal immigrant is nothing less than a joy

A wonderfully concise, unfussy movie; it is "easy" by the director's standards, which is to say that it doesn't leave any significant ellipses in the narrative up until the aggressively darling ending.

...an upbeat little tome that leaves a good feeling to the spirit.

Kaurism?ki can almost restore your hope in humanity.

Kaurismaki dives into French film culture in 'Le Havre'

You almost become a citizen of Le Havre, watching this film and rejoicing at the end as two newfound, unexpected friends share a drink.

It's a straightforward yet completely artificial scenario, with welcome overtones of Italian Neo-Realism.

Unlike the director's typical hero, Wilms's spare performance conveys confidence rather than defeat. He and the kid warm the heart, thawing Kaurism?ki's usual icy aplomb.

Heart-wrenching but ultimately inspirational.

Le Havre is not the filmmaker's best work (see La Vie de Boh?me for that), but no matter the storm, we should be grateful to dock in this port.

An easygoing story of human relationships with a sharp political comment about European immigration.

So breezy that once the film ends, it simply drifts away

Video: Cain: ?Stupid people are ruining America?

>>> the presidential race . the republican front -runners are trading jabs as herman cain tries to rally support in the states to stay in the race. chuck todd is nbc 's chief white house correspondent. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning. despite all the talk about herman cain reassessing his campaign following the latest allegations of infidelity cain is showing no signs he is about to drop out of the race, and unless his family is pressuring him to do it there may not be much incentive for him to get out.

>> these stupid people are ruining america.

>> reporter: with his fading campaign in jeopardy herman cain is defiant oddly choosing to campaign in ohio wednesday, a state whose primary is seven months away. cain told supporters the allegations were a conspiracy.

>> they're attacking my character, my reputation, and my name in order to try and bring me down.

>> reporter: cain told fox news he'll decide whether to stay in the race by next week, acknowledging the accusations of infidelity and sexual harassment have taken their toll.

>> it is constantly weighing on me and my family, especially my family, because it continues to stir in the news.

>> reporter: later, in new hampshire , cain spoke about his wife, gloria.

>> i have talked to my wife many times since monday about this situation. i have not talked to her face to face . that's what i said. we have had many lengthy conversations. this is another reason why i am not going to make a decision until after we talk face to face .

>> reporter: still, cain 's acting like he's staying in the race. the campaign unveiled this new tv ad set to debut friday in iowa.

>> if you make me america's ceo we the people will take this country back.

>> reporter: in iowa, another former top tier candidate, michele bachmann , attracted unwanted attention with these comments on iran.

>> you may have heard that there is a break-in at the british embassy and the british had to pull their people out. that's exactly what i would do. we wouldn't have an american embassy in iran . i wouldn't allow that to be there.

>> reporter: bachmann's campaign tells nbc news she is fully aware there is no american embassy in iran , that she meant the british did the right thing shutting theirs. meanwhile, the race between current cofront-runners mitt romney and newt gingrich is heating up. romney is up with his first serious tv ad , reintroducing himself to new hampshire voters.

>> i spent my life in the private sector. i've competed with companies around the world. i've learned something about how it is that economies grow.

>> reporter: gingrich, who refers to romney as a great manager, says his own conservative credentials make him better equipped to take on president obama .

>> i think the person who is able to debate obama and draw a sharp and defined contrast has an enormous advantage. i don't think you go to the middle. you bring the middle to you.

>> reporter: republican power brokers seem increasingly comfortable if it's these two candidates making it into the finals for the republican nomination.

>> mitt romney understands business and job creation. newt gingrich understands government. those are two very important strengths.

>> now the gingrich resurgence campaign is having growing pains. they let a few things slip through the cracks which can happen with little staff. he failed to file for the missouri primary, a nonbinding primary, only a thousand dollars filing fee. every other candidate is on it. he doesn't have a full delegate slate in new hampshire . none of them are fatal blunders but symbolic of an organizational issue potentially. meanwhile, take a look at this moment from president obama on the noncampaign campaign trail in scranton, pennsylvania yesterday, working a rope line. a woman put a scare into the secret service when she was a little too enthusiastic trying to get his attention, grabbing at his bicep. the president kept smiling and did eventually loosen her grip. savannah?

Big East will seek dismissal of WVU lawsuit Dec. 5

(AP) ? The Big East will seek dismissal of a West Virginia University lawsuit aimed at invalidating conference bylaws and speeding up the Mountaineers' departure for the Big 12.

At a scheduling conference in Morgantown, Big East attorneys said they plan to file a motion Monday in Monongalia County Circuit Court, asking Circuit Judge Russell Clawges to either dismiss the case or put it on hold while a parallel lawsuit plays out in Rhode Island. That's where the Big East is based.

Attorney Benjamin Block said the Big East believes WVU has failed to lay a foundation for its claim that the bylaws are invalid. But if the judge believes there are grounds to move forward, he said, the case should be heard in Rhode Island.

WVU is trying to have the Big East's breach-of-contract lawsuit tossed from the Rhode Island court, arguing it has sovereign immunity as an agency of the state of West Virginia. A hearing on that motion to dismiss is set for Dec. 16, the lawyers said Thursday. In it, WVU also notes that it filed the lawsuit in Morgantown four days before the conference countersued.

The Mountaineers are making plans to join the Big 12 in 2012. WVU argues it should be allowed to leave now because the Big East breached its fiduciary duty by failing to maintain a balance between football-playing and non-football members.

But the Big East is seeking unspecified damages and an order that West Virginia stay in the conference for 27 months. Commissioner John Marinatto says West Virginia helped construct the bylaws and agreed to abide by them.

WVU has already sent half of the required $5 million exit fee to the Big East. The university contends that by accepting the down payment, the Big East agreed to the immediate withdrawal.

WVU attorneys pressed Clawges to fast-track the West Virginia lawsuit, saying the university needs a resolution by June 30.

"We need to know whether we're going to stay or go," said WVU lawyer Stephen LaCagnin.

However, Clawges was doubtful such a timeline can be met.

"My immediate reaction is ... it ain't gonna happen," the judge said.

Clawges agreed to an aggressive schedule for the West Virginia case but told the attorneys it will be up to them to make it happen. He also noted it could end with a settlement before ever getting to a jury.

"This is probably going to be worked out ? as opposed to a jury room ? in a conference room," he said.

WVU said it will reply to the Big East's motion to dismiss by Dec. 9, and Clawges has scheduled a hearing on the motions for 1 p.m. Dec. 19 in Morgantown. He may rule from the bench that day.

The trial is tentatively set for June 25, 2012.

Norway closes embassy in Iran after Brits attacked

(AP) ? Norway has closed its embassy in Tehran due to security concerns after Britain's mission was stormed by Iranian protesters, an official said Wednesday.

Hilde Steinfeld, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman in Oslo, said the decision to close the embassy was taken late Tuesday, but that Norway's diplomatic staff have not been evacuated from the country. "They're still in Tehran," she said.

Steinfeld would not go into greater detail, but said "the decision follows security concerns." She added that "it is in context with the attack on the British embassy yesterday."

Norway has four to five diplomatic staff deployed in the Iranian capital, she said.

On Tuesday, protesters stormed the British embassy in what apparently began as a state-approved show of anger over the latest Western sanctions to punish Iran for defiance over its nuclear program.

The protesters took down the Union Jack, set fire to an embassy vehicle and pelted buildings with petrol bombs.
