Illinois delays election to fill Jackson's House seat until April

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Illinois decided on Thursday to delay until April 9 an election to fill the U.S. House seat vacated by Democratic Representative Jesse Jackson Jr., who resigned last week amid an ethics investigation and concerns over his health.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn had said on Monday that the special election would be March 19 after a primary on February 26.

But the state Senate voted on Thursday to delay the vote until April to coincide with local elections and save money for the state, which faces a financial crisis. The state House had approved the change on Wednesday.

The winner of the February Democratic primary will be favored in the general election because Jackson's majority African-American district is solidly Democratic.

A number of Democrats have said they intend to run, including state Senators Donne Trotter and Toi Hutchinson, former U.S. Representative Mel Reynolds and Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale.

Reynolds had held Jackson's seat before resigning in 1995 after being convicted on criminal charges of sexual assault and solicitation of pornography.

Chicago Pastor Corey Brooks also is considering a run, a spokeswoman said.

Media reports said former U.S. Representative Debbie Halvorson, who lost to Jackson this year in the primaries, also plans to run for the seat.

In his two-page resignation letter, Jackson, 47, who has been treated for bipolar disorder and is reportedly under investigation for possible misuse of campaign funds, acknowledged he was the target of a federal probe and in possible plea talks.

"I am aware of the ongoing federal investigation into my activities and I am doing my best to address the situation responsibly, cooperate with the investigators and accept responsibility for my mistakes," Jackson wrote.

Jackson easily won re-election on November 6 despite the ethics questions.

His resignation did not result in any change in the political balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives, which has a solid Republican majority.

Jackson was treated for at least six weeks this summer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for bipolar disorder, a psychological condition marked by extreme mood swings.

He has also been the subject of a House ethics committee probe over an alleged bribe offered by a Jackson supporter in 2008 to then Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

The bribe was said to be intended to entice Blagojevich to appoint Jackson to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama. Jackson has admitted to lobbying for the seat, but denied knowing about any money offered to Blagojevich, who has since been convicted on corruption charges and imprisoned.

According to news reports citing unnamed sources, Jackson is also being investigated by the FBI over possible misuse of campaign money. The FBI has not confirmed the reports.

WR has 'heard' of Viagra use to gain edge on field

(AP) ? The idea that NFL players might use Viagra to gain an edge on the field left Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs practically in tears ? from laughing.

He wasn't the only one.

Players cracked jokes about it Thursday, a day after Bears star receiver Brandon Marshall said he had heard that some players were using Viagra and hoping it would give them an advantage during games. Punch lines aside, experts say it's unlikely the erectile-dysfunction drug would help.

"What would that do? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard," Minnesota Vikings long snapper Cullen Loeffler said.

Bears defensive back D.J. Moore wondered if Marshall was kidding and said: "I've never heard of that."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Viagra is not a banned substance and declined further comment.

Marshall started it all Wednesday when asked about a growing number of suspensions tied to amphetamines, including the ADHD drug Adderall. He said he didn't know much about Adderall, but suggested Viagra could be viewed by players as a way to boost their energy.

"I know guys, it's such a competitive league, and guys try anything just to get that edge," he said. "I've heard of guys using Viagra, seriously, because the blood, it's supposed to thin. . I don't know. Some crazy stuff. It's kind of scary with some of these chemicals that are in some of these things, so you have to be careful."

But using Viagra for more touchdowns and tackles?

"I didn't even know people could do that," New York Giants tight end Martellus Bennett said. And his teammate Justin Tuck added: "I can't imagine why people would take steroids, so I have no comment on Viagra. Besides, my wife would be very upset with me."

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday, a 15-year NFL veteran, said some of his teammates were talking about Marshall's Viagra remarks but he had never heard of such a thing himself.

"I don't understand what good it would do," he said.

Dr. Olivier Rabin, science director at the World Anti-Doping Agency in Montreal, said it is unlikely Viagra does anything to improve football performance in NFL players. He also said there is no evidence the drug might somehow mask the use of steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs.

Rabin noted that research in high altitudes found the drug helped improve oxygen flow in climbers with impaired lung function. That's because Viagra can dilate blood vessels, and vessels in the lung constrict in high altitudes.

Research involving cyclists at high altitudes found similar benefits, but Rabin said studies have shown the drug has no effect on athletic performance at sea level.

University of Miami researcher Kevin Jacobs has studied Viagra in simulated high-altitude environments and "didn't find much benefit in young, healthy, active individuals."

"No one has really tested it in football players doing exercise. Whatever benefit they think they're getting is probably more psychological than anything," said Jacobs, an associate professor in the kinesiology and sport sciences department.

Marshall said he doesn't take medication "of any sort" and noted that the NFL's drug policy is strict.

"Any time you take anything over the counter, if you don't approve it with your training room, you can get popped," he said. "Some of it's fair, but some of it kind of puts you in a tough spot as a professional athlete. Because the only thing you'll see is getting busted for PEDs, but it could be something over the counter for a little sickness. You just have to be on top of your Ps and Qs."

Johnson Development to Solicit Projects for 113-Acre Memphis ...

November 29, 2012

By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor?

Johnson Development Associates has big plans for Aerotropolis Logistics?Park, the 113-acre site it acquired in Memphis, Tenn., earlier this year. The company is making the property available for as much as 1.2 million square feet of speculative development and build-to-suit opportunities and has tapped commercial real estate services firm Jones Lang LaSalle Inc. to spearhead the marketing effort.

Given the current state of the Memphis industrial market, it appears that JDA?s endeavor is kicking off at the right time. Demand for Class A accommodations continued to climb in the third quarter, driven to a great degree by healthcare, retail and third-party logistics companies, according to a report by JLL. For industrial tenants, the attractiveness of the Memphis market is undeniable, due in no small part to the very simple issue of practicality; affordable labor, low cost of living and relatively low industrial rental rates are reeling in renters.

And the attraction to Aerotropolis is likely to prove irresistible as well. The property, which will bloom on the former site of the Mall of Memphis, is not only located in the right city, it?s sited in the right area of the right city. Aerotropolis is within three miles of Memphis International Airport, the second largest cargo airport in the world, and just four miles away from the newly expanded BNSF Memphis Intermodal Facility. And then there?s the park?s close proximity to the Port of Memphis, which holds the distinction of being the fourth largest inland port in the U.S. Additionally, its immediate access to I-240 puts it within easy reach of the third-busiest trucking corridor in the country.

The call for large blocks of premier industrial space in Memphis has been growing louder, as noted in the JLL report. New Breed Logistics recently expanded its presence in Memphis by taking on 404,400 square feet at Southpark Distribution Center O. And in the absence of availability, some companies are creating additional elbowroom for themselves. In October, Nike Inc. revealed that it will invest $301 million in a project that will add 1.8 million square feet to its 1.1 million square-foot facility.

In the Memphis industrial real estate sector, bigger is better at the moment. ?There currently is a void in the market for Class A industrial product over 500,000 square feet,? Jack Wohrman, an associate broker with JLL, told Commercial Property Executive. ?The Memphis market currently has one existing Class A building over 500,000 square feet that is vacant and one under construction.? Worhman added that four spaces with more than 500,000 square feet of contiguous square footage have been occupied by new tenants to date in 2012. ?Consequently,? he added, ?tenant demand will likely outweigh supply in 2013, requiring more new construction.??

Aerotropolis certainly has its local backers. The City of Memphis contracted MAP Studio Planning and Policy Advisors for an assessment and the firm gave the project solid thumbs-up.

?We support the Aerotropolis [planned development] application because we believe that the JDA group will provide the right mix of project financing, sensitivity to land use issues, attraction of top-notch companies to the site, and commitment to urban revitalization,? Louise Mercuro, president of MAP Studio, wrote in a letter to the City Council.

UN upgrades Palestinian status to 'non-member state'

Palestinians had a major symbolic victory when the United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to recognize them, but the U.S. argued the new status could set back Palestinians in the path to peace. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

By NBC News staff and wire services

The U.N. General Assembly approved a resolution on Thursday giving implicit recognition to Palestinian statehood despite threats by the United States and Israel to punish the Palestinian Authority by withholding funds for the West Bank government.

The resolution, which lifts the Palestinian Authority's U.N. observer status from "entity" to "non-member state," like the Vatican possesses, easily passed the 193-nation General Assembly with 138 nations voting in favor, and nine opposed, including the United States. Forty-one countries abstained, including the United Kingdom.

Israel, the United States and the other members who opposed the resolution see it as a largely symbolic and counterproductive move by the Palestinians. The vote took place on the 65th anniversary of the assembly's adoption of resolution 181 on the partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has led the campaign to win support for the resolution, which follows an eight-day conflict this month between Israel and Islamists in the Gaza Strip, who are pledged to Israel's destruction and oppose his efforts toward a negotiated peace.

The U.S. State Department made a last-ditch effort to get Abbas to reconsider, but the Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited self-rule in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, held firm.?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, speaking at the Brookings Institution on?Thursday, said the U.S. believes the resolution will "do nothing to advance the peace and the two-state solution we all want to see."

She noted that while the U.S. planned to vote "no," she played down differences with key diplomatic partners in Europe, including France, which were expected to vote in favor of the resolution.

Reuters

A Palestinian man shouts slogans during a rally in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Thursday. The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution on Thursday to upgrade the Palestinian Authority's observer status at the United Nations.

"We and our European partners agree on the most fundamental issues and share a common objective ? two states living side-by-side living in peace and security," Clinton said.

Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., said in a statement after the vote that "the only way to establish such a Palestinian state and resolve all permanent-status issues is through the crucial, if painful, work of direct negotiations between the parties."

"The United States therefore calls upon both the parties to resume direct talks without preconditions on all the issues that divide them," Rice said.

The U.K. had committed to voting for the resolution if Abbas had shown commitment to resuming peace negotiations without preconditions. Lacking that assurance, Britain abstained from the vote.

Following the vote at the UN General Assembly the Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "We continue to believe that the prospects for a swift return to negotiations on a two state solution ??the only way to create a Palestinian state on the ground?? would be greater today if President Abbas had been able to give the assurances we suggested, and without which we were unable to vote in favor of the resolution.

UN Palestinian statehood vote to be a personal political victory for Abbas?

"In particular, we called on President Abbas to set out a willingness to return to negotiations without preconditions, and to signal that the Palestinians would not immediately seek action in the International Criminal Court, which would be likely to make a return to negotiations impossible.

"Nonetheless, we will redouble our efforts to restart the peace process, and will continue our strong support for President Abbas, the Palestinian Authority, and a two state solution," he said.

Despite its fierce opposition, Israel made efforts that appeared designed to prevent diplomatic isolation. In recent days, it toned down threats of retaliation in the face of wide international support for the initiative, notably among its European allies.

"The decision at the United Nations will change nothing on the ground," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in Jerusalem. "It will not advance the establishment of a Palestinian state. It will delay it further."

But U.N. diplomats say that Israel's reaction might not be so measured if the Palestinians seek ICC action against Israel on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity or other crimes the court would have jurisdiction over.

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice addresses the assembly following a vote on whether to recognize a single Palestinian state.

Granting Palestinians the title of "non-member observer state" falls short of full U.N. membership???something the Palestinians failed to achieve last year. But it does allow them access to the International Criminal Court and other international bodies, should they choose to join them.

Speaking at an annual U.N. event in support of the Palestinians, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki appealed to U.N. member states to support Thursday's U.N. resolution. He also repeated his support for peace with Israel.

"Despite diminishing hopes and the decline of the situation on the ground due to Israel violations, we remain committed to the two-state solution and our hand remains extended in peace," he said at U.N. headquarters in New York.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland reiterated U.S. warnings that the move could cause a reduction of U.S. economic support for the Palestinians. The Israelis have also warned they might take significant deductions out of monthly transfers of duties that Israel collects on the Palestinians' behalf.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as calling on Washington and Israel to avoid "any hasty and destructive decisions."

"Supporting the Palestinian authorities is not only in the interest of the Palestinian side, but also of Israel and the whole international community that is longing for a peaceful political settlement," he said.

The European Union, a key donor for the Palestinians, has made clear it will not curtail aid after Thursday's vote.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also called for a revival of the peace process: "Israelis and Palestinians must break out of a zero-sum mentality, and embrace a peaceful path forward."

Flag-waving Palestinians thronged the squares of the West Bank and Gaza Strip before Thursday's vote. In a rare show of unity, Abbas's Islamist rivals Hamas, who have ruled Gaza since a brief civil war in 2007, let backers of the president's Fatah movement hold demonstrations there.

Peace talks have been stalled for two years, mainly over Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which have expanded despite being deemed illegal by most of the world. There are 4.3 million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

In the draft resolution, the Palestinians have pledged to relaunch the peace process immediately following the U.N. vote.

With strong support from the developing world that makes up the majority of U.N. members, it is virtually assured of securing more than the requisite simple majority. Palestinian officials hope for more than 130 yes votes.

Abbas has focused on securing as many votes as possible from Europe, and his efforts appear to have paid off.

Going into the vote, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland had all pledged to support the resolution.?

Fed survey: US economy growing at steady pace

(AP) ? A pickup in consumer spending and steady home sales helped lift economic growth in October and early November in most parts of the United States, according to a Federal Reserve survey released Wednesday. The one exception was the Northeast, which was slowed by Superstorm Sandy.

Growth improved in nine of its 12 the Fed's regional banking districts, the Fed survey said. Growth was weaker in New York, Philadelphia and Boston ? areas where Sandy caused widespread disruptions.

The survey noted that growth improved despite nervousness about the "fiscal cliff." That's the name for automatic tax increases and spending cuts that could kick in next year if Congress and the Obama administration can't reach a budget deal before then.

Hiring increased in more than half of the districts. But manufacturing shrank or slowed in seven regions and was mixed in two others.

The report, called the Beige Book, provides anecdotal information on economic conditions around the country from October through Nov. 14. The information collected by the regional banks will be used as the basis for the Fed's policy discussion at the Dec. 11-12 meeting.

Many economists believe the Fed could announce plans to buy more Treasury bonds at that meeting to replace a program set to expire at the end of the year. The goal of the program is to lower long-term interest rates and encourage more borrowing and spending.

The purchases would come on top of the Fed's mortgage bond buying program, which is intended to lower mortgage rates and make home-buying more affordable.

Recent government and private reports show the economy improved in October and early November, even as Sandy halted business activity along the East Coast.

Employers added 171,000 jobs last month and hiring in September and August was stronger than previously thought.

Rising home values, more hiring and lower gas prices pushed consumer confidence in November to the highest level in nearly five years. A better mood among consumers appears to have encouraged businesses to invest more in October after pulling back over the summer. And it could point to a stronger holiday shopping season.

There are already signs that consumer optimism is leading to more spending. A record number of Americans visited stores and shopping websites over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation.

Still, if lawmakers and the Obama administration fail to reach a budget deal soon, the threat of tax increases could make consumers more cautious in the final weeks of the year.

Many economists say worries about the fiscal cliff could be among a number of factors that keep growth in the October-December quarter below an annual rate of 2 percent. That's too slow to make much of a dent in unemployment and could prompt the Fed to take further action at its next meeting.

How to spot a buried fuel oil tank

If you're buying an old house in the Twin Cities with pipes sticking out of the ground in your yard, heads up. ?You might have an oil tank somewhere at the property. ? While the vast majority of homes in the Twin Cities are heated with natural gas, there is still a small percentage of homes in the metro area that are heated with fuel oil, and far more properties with abandoned oil tanks.

When a home gets converted from fuel oil to natural gas, the fuel oil tank becomes abandoned. ?Once the tank is abandoned, it needs to be dealt with.

When tanks are abandoned

If the tank is buried, it needs to be removed or filled in place ?If a fuel oil tank is left buried, it could eventually leak. ?A leaking underground storage tank (LUST) can contaminate the soil as well as the home, creating an environmental hazard that can cost a ridiculous amount of money to clean up. ?You can visit the?EPA's web site on LUSTs?for more info.

Oil TankWhen a tank is located inside the house but not buried, it needs to be properly disconnected, and sometimes removed. ?A fuel oil tank takes up a large amount of room, so most people choose to have them removed, but requirements vary from city to city. ?For example, once a fuel oil tank is abandoned in Minneapolis, it needs to be removed from the property. ?This is written in to their?Truth-In-Sale of Housing?Evaluator Guidelines under item #25. ?The guidelines state:

"The evaluator shall determine if there are any abandoned fuel oil tanks. If found, mark as?RRP?or?RRE. A licensed contractor must properly remove them. (A permit is not needed if the tank is less than 200 gallons.). (Per Uniform Fire Code Sec. 79 and Mpls. Code 48.145)"

Another option for an abandoned fuel oil tank is to stick it out in your front yard and paint it like a cow. ?You might think I'm kidding, but I've seen it done more than once.

Fuel oil tank painted like a cow, courtesy of Scott Graham

Clues to a buried fuel oil tank

The easiest way to identify a potential buried fuel oil tank is to look for a fill pipe and vent pipe at the exterior of the home. ?Sometimes the pipes will go through the foundation wall of the home.

Oil Fill Pipes

Sometimes they just go down in to the ground.

Oil fill pipes2

When fuel oil tanks are removed, the fill and vent pipes need to be removed or cut off and filled with concrete. ?If you find pipes sticking out of the ground or foundation wall like the ones shown above, it probably means one of two things: either the tank is still there, or it was removed by a hack. ?No professional oil tank removal contractor is going to leave the vent and fill pipes looking like that.

According to Dean Nething of Dean's Tanks, there were many 'erroneous deliveries' that happened during the 60's and 70's, where one house address got confused with another. ?About once a year, a basement would get contaminated with hundreds of gallons of fuel oil. ?In every one of these cases, the contamination was so bad that the fuel oil company, Standard Oil, had to buy the property so they could tear it down and dig out the basement. ?This is why the fill pipes?always?need to be removed when the tank is removed.

When the pipes are right next to each other like in the photos above, there's a good chance that the fuel oil tank is (or was) located inside the house or under the house. ?When the pipes are separated from each other, there's a very good possibility that there's a buried fuel oil tank in the yard. ?The photo below came from a house in Minneapolis - these pipes led to a 1,000 gallon tank buried in the yard.

Buried Oil Tank

Here's another example - the fill and vent pipes were located in the front yard behind some bushes at a home in Edina. ?These innocuous, nearly hidden pipes led to an enormous buried tank in the front yard.

Fill pipes in front yard

There are a few diagrams floating around online that show an?indoor?style of tank buried in the ground, like the big green one that I showed at the beginning of this post. ? Those indoor style of tanks are extremely unusual to find buried - or according to Dean's Tank, "once in a blue moon". ?The vast majority of buried tanks look a lot more like big drums, like the ones shown below. ?These photos are courtesy of Dean's Tank.

Oil tank being removed

Oil tank being removed2

Oil tank being removed3

Oil tank removed 4

Here's another example of pipes sticking out of the ground leading to a buried oil tank in the yard. ?In this particular case, the fill pipe had a cap that could be opened. ?I stuck my tape measure down the pipe, and it came out soaked in fuel oil. ?It smelled like fuel oil for the next two weeks, despite my half-hearted efforts to clean it off. ?Fuel oil has a strong odor, and takes a long time to go away. ?It's easy to understand how a leaking tank can create such a nasty problem.

Buried oil tank outdoors

The person buying this home had the sellers remove the tank; here's what the site looked like after the tank was removed.

Oil tank removed

What to do if you suspect a buried oil tank

If you suspect a buried oil tank, call?Dean's Tank, Inc.? They've been specializing in fuel oil tank removal / abandonment in the Twin Cities for over 25 years. ?If a fuel oil tank has been professionally removed from a property, there's a good chance that this was the company that did it. ?To determine if a fuel oil tank is present, they'll come out and do a site inspection for $200.

Dean estimates his company has removed between ten and twenty thousand?tanks. ?The cost of removing a buried fuel oil tank varies greatly from property to property, but costs will typically range from $2,000 to $3,000. ?Having a tank filled in place typically costs just a little bit less.

According to Dean and?Minnesota Real Estate Attorney?John Braun, some homeowners may qualify for free oil tank removal by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, but certain conditions apply. ?You can read more about this program in the first link included at the end of this post under 'Useful Links'.

Buried Fuel Oil Tanks and Home Inspection Standards

Home Inspection Standards of Practice specifically state that buried fuel oil tanks are not something that home inspectors are required to inspect. ?Here's some SOP language from different home inspection organizations:

  • ASHI: ?Inspectors?are NOT required to?inspect:?underground items including, but not limited to underground storage tanks or other underground indications of their presence, whether abandoned or active.
  • NAHI:?The inspector is not required to record location of any on-site visible fuel tanks within or directly adjacent to the structure.
  • InterNACHI:?The inspector is not required to inspect fuel tanks or underground or concealed fuel supply systems.

Does this mean that if a home inspector sees obvious clues that a buried fuel oil tank is present, they should keep their mouth shut? ?Heck no. ?A buried fuel oil tank is important to know about when buying a house. ?If a home inspector has enough experience to suspect a buried fuel tank, they should say so, even though they're not?required?to.

kuttarpora: Heavy Equipment & Tools, Home Improvement: Skid ...

Skid & the Too Tiny Tunnel (Hardcover)
By Jeffery Stoddard

Review & Description

Skid, the littlest yellow tractor in the equipment yard, wants to be mighty like the giant bulldozers, tall cranes, and massive diggers who tower over him. But all the big machines tell him he is just a dinky tractor with a putt-putt engine. While they are busy building a new road through the mountain, Skid is left behind to take out the garbage.

When disaster strikes and a tunnel the machines are digging collapses, Pillar, the biggest bulldozer, is left trapped in the rubble. Only a small opening is left at the tunnel entrance and the only one who can fit through the opening is Skid who is afraid of the dark.

Now it's up to the tiniest tractor to save the day. Can Skid find the courage to do what he was made to do and prove that he doesn't have to be big to be mighty? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV

Israel's Barak says quitting politics

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Defense Minister Ehud Barak, a main architect of Israel's policy towards Iran's nuclear program, said in a surprise announcement on Monday that he was quitting politics and would not run in the January 22 national election.

"I have decided to retire from political life and not to run for the next Knesset ... I will end my term as defense minister once the next government is established, in about three months," he told a news conference.

"I want to dedicate more time to my family. I feel I have exhausted dealing with political life, which has never been a passion of mine, and I feel there is room to allow other people to serve in senior roles in Israel," he said.

Opinion polls had predicted a poor showing for the small party that Barak currently leads, Atzmaut, but recently indicated voter support had strengthened as a result of Israel's eight-day offensive in the Gaza Strip that ended in a ceasefire on Wednesday.

Barak, 70, has been a key player in Israel's tough policy towards curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions and a pointman in the Jewish state's strategic relations with the United States.

He has been defense minister since 2007 and served as prime minister from 1999 to 2001.

Everything Cebu | Corner Bakery

Tucked away in a secluded location here in Cebu City is a cozy little haven where you?ll find baked goods that are deliciously tempting and freshly made. Corner Bakery might sound like a very unassuming name for this place, but it?s also apt because the place really is situated along an intersection of two streets, in the residential neighborhood called Villa Aurora.

corner bakery Corner Bakery This bakery was founded in 2007. At first, owners Jason and Michelle Ng operated their business as a home-based one that provided yummy baked goods for their family and friends, who passed the word around. Good word of mouth was apparently enough to keep bringing the customers to them even though they did not advertise extensively. Michelle Ng told the Freeman that wants the quality of Corner Bakery?s products to speak for itself and that quality is at the top of her agenda when she creates the dishes served in their cozy little space. This commitment to quality also ties in with the fact that Corner Bakery?s products are made with no preservatives.

By the way, don?t confuse this Corner Bakery with another Corner Bakery that happens to be the bakery brand of Max?s Restaurant. Corner Bakery Company?s signage has a style similar to that of the Corner Bakery Caf? franchise brand in the United States.

Regardless of its name, Corner Bakery also serves food aside from baked goods. Pasta dishes like lasagna, spaghetti Bolognese, and penne ai funghi (short thick diagonally cut tubular pasta, with mushrooms and cream sauce) are on the menu, for those who would like carbs other than bread or pastries. The couple who own and manage Corner Bakery travel occasionally and pick up culinary trends that they can incorporate into their menu.

People who use the Web site foursquare.com have good things to say about the hot chili wings (served with bleu cheese dip) and the potato salad. Even a bakery staple like pan de sal comes highly recommended when it?s from Corner Bakery, and if you?re the kind of person who likes to snack on sandwiches, then you might want to give the tuna bun a try. As for Corner Bakery?s dessert items, the s?mores (treats with the flavor of toasted marshmallow and chocolate sandwiched between graham crackers), mochi, mango cream pie (made with Guadalupe mangoes), and red velvet cake are the most popular among the Foursquare users.

Corner Bakery red velvet cheesecake Corner Bakery

The Web site foodspotting.com has some customer photos of Corner Bakery?s blueberry cheesecake, choco swirl cheesecake, and red velvet cheesecake, for the cheesecake fanatics out there. People on Foodspotting also recommended Corner Bakery?s homemade chocolate, choco-nutty banana cupcake, carrot cupcake, spaghetti Bolognese, and crostini (slices of toasted bread served with a spread). Even on Instagram, people have been known to rave about the yummy spaghetti Bolognese or the carbonara, the bread, and the artisan dark chocolate bars from Corner Bakery Company.

Along with such a treat as cinnamon bread or possibly hotdog bread topped with mozzarella, you would probably enjoy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. Cold drinks like Iced Caf? Latte, Mocharamel Frost, and Coffee Jelly Frost are also available for you to pair with your food order.

If you have special occasions coming up, Corner Bakery takes orders for customized cakes and cupcakes. It has made cakes with themes like Ninjago, Power Rangers, Transformers, Bob the Builder, Geronimo Stilton, Dora the Explorer, and Tangled that were commissioned for some lucky kids? birthdays. Since Christmas is fast approaching, you might be interested to know that in 2011, Corner Bakery had quite a large selection of Christmas goodies as gift ideas. These included its Christmas collection of Angry Birds cupcakes, Santa Claus and poinsettia cupcakes, ?food for the gods? cupcakes, limited-edition vanilla almond brownies, boxes of ensaymaditas (cheese and Belgian choco flavors), fruit jelly, chocolate chip Kahlua bars, and bucketfuls of chocolate treats. Its Christmas cakes with holiday designs were the following: red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, old-fashioned chocolate fudge cake, chocolate torte, and orange champagne torte.

On Monday through Saturday, you may visit the bakery from 9 a.m to 9 p.m., and on Sunday, its hours are 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Corner Bakery is at 44 President Roxas Street, Villa Aurora, Cebu City. If you?re coming from the Ayala Center Cebu area, just turn left after Castle Peak Hotel onto President Roxas Street. Corner Bakery Company is at the left corner just after Abaseria Deli and Caf?. You can call the bakery at telephone number (032)238-3508 for orders. You could send mng.cbc@gmail.com an e-mail message if that?s what you would prefer. Its Web site is http://cornerbakery.multiply.com/ but with a more updated page on Facebook as well, at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Corner-Bakery/203542826344058

Colts Cheerleaders Shave Heads For Cancer Awareness, Chuck ...

On the sidelines, while the Bills and Colts battled it out, cheerleaders Megan M and Crystal Ann had their heads shaved in an effort to support cancer awareness and research.

The Colts beating the Bills 20-13 on Sunday was sweet. Chuck Pagano being present at the game, and getting a standing ovation from the home crowd at Lucas Oil Stadium, was sweeter. However, the icing on the cake was a gesture made by two Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders on the sideline during the game.

While the Bills and Colts battled it out on the field, cheerleaders Megan M and Crystal Ann had their heads shaved on the sideline in an effort to support cancer awareness and research. It was a beautiful moment, and all for a worthy, noble cause.

Cheerleaders exist on a football field to promote glamor, beauty, and fun. Their looks are everything, and many of us associate beauty with long, flowing hair. For two of them to shave that hair off was spectacular on their parts.

The campaign to shave Megan and Crystal Ann's heads was part of #OperationShaveMegansHead, all set-up by the Colts and their mascot, Blue. Megan was the only cheerleader slated to get buzz cut on Sunday, but Crystal Ann decided to join her in solidarity.

The campaign reportedly raised $ $22,670 over the past two weeks. The goal was to earn $10,000 for leukemia by November 25th. Mission accomplished. Bravo Megan and Crystal Ann.

Ask Engadget: best new smartphone that isn't massive?

Ask Engadget best new smartphone that isn't massive

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Diamar, who is eyeing up a new smartphone, but doesn't want one the size of a table tennis bat. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I read your site and I figured I'd give this a shot. I'll be in the market to upgrade my iPhone 4S, but all of the best smartphones now have huge screens. I've wanted a Galaxy SIII, but its 4.8-inch screen is pushing it. Can you recommend any current or future smartphones that don't have massive screens? Thanks!"

Were we in the construction trade, we'd be sucking the air over our teeth in a disapproving manner. If you're looking for a flagship model, then it's probably going to be on the sizable side:

Of course, if size is your only concern, then you could drop down a few levels (and price points) and snag a Galaxy S III Mini, which has a 4-inch display, but far more modest specs. That's our take on the situation, anyway, but what about the community? Share your thoughts, folks.

Older vets to post-9/11 vets: 'We had it harder'

Brennan Linsley, AP

World War II combat veteran Ben Kauffman, 86, carries an American flag as he listens to a speaker during a Veterans Day ceremony in Loveland, Colo., on Nov. 11. Cultural fault lines clearly run between the generations that saw action in different conflicts or that wore the uniform in different eras, including peacetime.

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

The war stories from his grandfather, though sparse in detail, blended one moment of explosive drama with a vague reference of death ??all wrapped around a description of how old-school military men used to handle both experiences.

David Weidman, who spent two tours in Afghanistan with the Air Force, recalls his late grandfather, a veteran of World War II and Korea, telling him that he survived having his body and his Jeep blown through a wall. He did not reveal to Weidman where that attack happened. He also gave his grandson some advice: ?You don?t want to be in a foxhole talking to a guy one minute and then you turn around and he?s dead. You just don?t want to experience that.?

?He said he just dealt with it all. It?s that same mentality: ?I did what I had to do. I got myself better then I went back to work.? Other than that, he never spoke about the wars at all. That tells me he never did deal with it,? added Weidman, 32.

Cultural fault lines clearly run between generations of veterans who saw action in different conflicts or who wore the uniform in different eras, including peacetime. The refrain echoed by some older veterans to some younger ex-service members: ?We had it so much harder than today?s military.?

It is, quite likely, a tradition that hearkens back to the Civil War or possibly the Revolutionary War, according to some ex-service members. But many post-9/11 veterans who have chatted with older veterans revealed the sentiment they've often heard carry the same note: ?We just came home, put our heads down and got to work ??without any whining."

Buried, not so subtly, in that message is that the current crop is a tad less tough and lot more needy. Some of that cultural gap may have to do with how aging veterans were taught not to talk about combat stress whereas today's military members are constantly urged to open up about any symptoms of anxiety they're feeling. It's a battle of Macho circa 1945 or 1970 versus Macho 2012.?

This age-old cultural chasm between military generations has been further fueled in recent years as the modern American armed services welcomed far more women into its ranks (about 15 percent are female), and as the federal government repealed the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which barred openly gay people from serving their country, modern veterans say.?

?Human nature is that we all resist change, especially as we get older. The cultural changes, especially within the military, are hard to swallow by some people my age,? said Craig Roberts, who served as a carrier-based Naval pilot, flying missions over Vietnam from 1969 to 1971.

?I?m in my 60s now. And (some veterans my age) just take a blanket view of the military as softer now, that it is a less-difficult experience to live through. I don?t think that?s true at all,? Roberts said. ?In combat, it doesn?t matter what gender is next to you, the experience is the same.

But the generational disconnect among veterans also impacted Roberts and tens of thousands of his fellow service members after they returned from an unpopular war in the early 1970s.

Click here for more military-related coverage from NBC News.

?We of the Vietnam era experienced some of that when we joined veterans services organizations ??or attempted to join???and many felt rejected by the older fellas there from Korea and World War II,? Roberts said. ?Because there was a resentment???they perceived that they had seen more severe combat than we were in. There may be some truth to that.

?So I think it may be a generational thing. As one gets older, one views one?s past life???the hardships and, sometimes, the triumphs???as being greater.?

Heroes of long-ago wars find new homes with families across the country through a program that keeps the veterans out of nursing homes or hospitals.

While heading an organization that represents more than 200,000 veterans of from Iraq and Afghanistan, Paul Rieckhoff said he?s become well aware of what he calls ?a little bit of a sibling rivalry? between generations of veterans.

?We all generally stick together (as veterans) but some of it is just more deeply ingrained,? said Rieckhoff, founder and chief executive officer of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. In Iraq, he served as an infantry platoon leader, leading 38 men on more than 1,000 mounted and dismounted combat patrols.?

?This is also just the military: Everybody thinks everybody else had it harder than every generation that came after them. You go to Fort Bragg and they'll tell you how much harder basic training was (years ago). That?s always there,? Rieckhoff said. ?I think there?s also some some level of fear and apprehension just around the evolution of our culture. It?s happening in the military, too."

That this version of the American military is the first to include so many women ?is hard for some people to accept,? Rieckhoff added. ?And now that ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell? has been repealed, that too is hard for some people to accept.?

While some young-old divides certainly exist within pockets of the veteran community, Rieckoff said ?a tremendous sense of unity also descends generations." As evidence, he cited the fact that that the chairman of IAVA?s board (Edward Vick) is a Vietnam veteran and that, before Thanksgiving, Rieckhoff received a letter of support from former Sen. Bob Dole, a World War II veteran.

?I think most veterans, no matter what era, including my era???Vietnam???are not resentful, whatsoever, of the treatment given to today?s veterans,? Roberts added. ?In fact, we celebrate this. We applaud it. This is what is due to them. Their combat experience and ours, while it is apples and oranges in some ways, was still???all???combat experience. The stresses of combat are the same, no matter what the venue is, no matter what the era is.?

tips for small businessA home office allows you the freedom to tune out the distractions of everyday life and focus on your work. In addition, you can get more done in less time because there is no commute. However, the key to this productivity is organization. It's much better for the bottom line to get that key proposal out, for example, than to hunt for that long missing tax document.?Fortunately, organizing your home office isn't as daunting as it sounds. Follow the 5 tips below and watch your productivity soar:

When you're pressed for time, it's easy to throw your files and papers into one "To Do" pile. Unfortunately, however, this pile often gets persistently bigger, eventually overwhelming your desk, your home office and your ability to maximize productivity.?The first step toward organization is digging into that mass of paperwork and creating smaller piles based upon subject, function, or importance. For example, you could place your proposals in one pile and your tax related items in another.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? Famed Puerto Rican boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho is clinically brain dead, doctors said Thursday, but family members disagreed on whether to take him off life support and two of the fighter's aunts said later that relatives had agreed to wait two more days.

Dr. Ernesto Torres said doctors had no more medical tests to perform on Camacho, who was shot in the face Tuesday night.

"We have done everything we could," said Torres, who is director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan. "We have to tell the people of Puerto Rico and the entire world that Macho Camacho has died, he is brain dead."

He said at a news conference Thursday morning that Camacho's father indicated he wanted the boxer taken off life support and his organs donated, but other relatives opposed the idea.

"This is a very difficult moment," Torres said.

One of the fighter's aunts, Aida Camacho, said Thursday evening that two of Camacho's sisters had asked to have two more days to spend with him, and other family members had agreed even though they felt it was time to give in.

"I'm a person of a lot of faith, and I believe in miracles, but science has spoken," she said.

Another aunt, Blanca Camacho, also said the family had agreed to the wishes of the two sisters from New York to hold off on ending life support. But, she added, "There's nothing left here. He's already dead."

Most of Camacho's relatives left the hospital by Thursday night without commenting.

About a dozen people stood vigil outside. One, Orvil Miller, a singer and actor, expressed sadness about Camacho's fate and recalled his admiration for the fighter's flamboyance.

"He had the combination of the skills of a boxer along with a great sense for entertainment," Miller said.

Steve Tannenbaum, a friend and a former boxing agent for Camacho, said in a phone interview that he idolized Camacho as a boxer.

"He is one of the greatest small fighters that I have ever seen," he said. "Hector Camacho had a legendary status."

Tannenbaum said he initially believed Camacho would survive. "He was almost like the indestructible man. He had so many troubles with the law, so many altercations in his life. It's a great shame."

The 50-year-old Camacho was shot as he and a friend sat in a Ford Mustang parked outside a bar Tuesday night. Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket, and a 10th bag open inside the car. Camacho's friend, identified as 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, was killed in the attack.

Doctors had initially said Camacho was expected to survive, but his condition worsened and his heart stopped briefly overnight Tuesday, Torres said. The bullet entered his jaw and lodged in his shoulder after tearing through three of four main arteries in his neck, affecting blood flow through his brain, doctors said.

"That lack of oxygen greatly damaged Macho Camacho's brain," Torres said.

Camacho was born in Bayamon, a city within the San Juan metropolitan area, but he grew up mostly in New York's Harlem neighborhood, earning the nickname "the Harlem Heckler."

He won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s and fought high-profile bouts against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending the former champ's final comeback attempt. Camacho had a career record of 79-6-3.

In recent years, he divided his time between Puerto Rico and Florida, appearing regularly on Spanish-language television as well as on a reality show called "Es Macho Time!" on YouTube. In San Juan, he had been living in the beach community of Isla Verde, where he would readily pose for photos with tourists who recognized him on the street, said former pro boxer Victor "Luvi" Callejas, a neighbor and friend.

Camacho battled drugs, alcohol and other problems throughout his life. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. While arresting him on the burglary charge in January 2005, police also found the drug ecstasy.

A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation.

His wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce several years ago.
