The web of trust, WOT for short, is a company based in Finland that is more like a religious sect as they initiate and draw on individuals that are encouraged to compete with each other at reviewing web site on mass. The more hours a day they spend reviewing sites the higher the weighting of the reviewer becomes. In their quest to be the best, their lives are becoming consumed and every minute of every day is spent on reviewing web sites. When they manage to reach the level of a platinum badge they are granted a mass destruction tool where they can condemn 100 web sites at a time. The problem is that a large percentage of good legit web sites will end up being branded as poor.
A recent expert in the field of the web described the Web Of Trust as the following:-
?? I?ve always been suspicious of schemes like these that incentivise people to comment on things, and rate them. Unfortunately, there?s still a sense online that anything goes, whether it?s libel, abuse or baseless criticism of a company?.
The Web of Trust will not intervene if a good site has been inaccurately branded poor, they claim ?we only host the platform we have no control on the user input. If your web site has been affected negatively we cannot help?.
As of December 2012 below are the highest ranked individual reviews. One wonders at how many great web sites have been wrongly condemned by these individuals.
A very detailed list of events implying that WOT will actually revert to dishonest practices to try and pervert the course of justice, can be viewed at the blog below. They discuss many of the blatant flaws within the Web of Trust system, the lack of protection from having great web sites branded as poor, and the failing of any real training for the WOT Reviewers. Read the myWOT ?Web of Trust?? Review for more info.
Further relevant information can be found from the following resource Hasoffers performace marketing blog.
A classic example where some good sites have been wrongly branded poor can be found at Trust Pilot.
I feel the concept of WOT was once probably a good idea, however as they have grown, money profit and greed have become the norm and so investment houses like inventure Oy are trying to make a fast profit? ignorant of the flaws that lie within the process.
If you really would like a site reviewer then we would recommend McAfee Site Advisor backed by industry approved Resources. They offer ?Each day, thousands of times a day, McAfee visits Websites and tests them for a comprehensive set of security threats. From annoying pop-ups to back door Trojans that can steal your identity, we find the danger zones before you stumble on them. Here?s what our test computers look for.
Downloadable files like screensavers, toolbars and file sharing programs can be-or may be bundled with ? adware, spyware, viruses and other malicious computer code. Sometimes, the malware is added without your knowledge. Sometimes, you click ?yes? or ?I agree? without reading the fine print. The end result is often the same ? a PC that slows to a crawl, a hidden password sniffer that is used to steal your identity, or valuable personal files destroyed or scrambled.
We download and install each file we find ? we even open zip files. We then scan our test computer to see what changes have been made. If a program is determined to be a virus, Trojan, or certain other types of malware, that program will earn a red rating?.
