Girls basketball: Euless Trinity coach Sue Cannon earns 1,000th career victory

Euless Trinity girls basketball coach Sue Cannon earned her 1,000th career victory Friday as Trinity beat Kimball, 76-36, in the Flower Mound tournament.

Cannon is in her 41st season of coaching and her 27th season at Trinity. Trinity is 2-2 this season, giving Cannon a career record of 1,000-314.

?I?ve been blessed to work with some very talented people,?? Cannon said. She added that several things are more important than the milestone ? seeing her players go on to college, seeing them come back to visit and seeing her current players improve.

Granbury coach Leta Andrews is the national record holder, ending last season with 1,375 victories.

?I?ll never catch Leta,? Cannon said. ?She?s 10 years ahead of me. They had a group of us at the state tournament with 950 wins I think. There weren?t many of us. I feel blessed to be at Trinity. I loveTrinityHigh School. We have great kids and a great administration.?

As Trinity?s boys and girls athletic coordinator, Cannon is overseeing a major renovation project of the school?s athletic facilities. She said she wants to see through the completion of the project and coach at least one season through the new facilities. Cannon?s career started in the 1972-73 season inDurham,N.C.She moved toHoustonto further her education and it led to a 10-year stint at West Orange Stark before arriving at Trinity.
