Colleagues reflect on deceased real estate agent's influence on ...

BANGOR, Maine ? Colleagues remembered one of Bangor?s most active supporters and businesswomen following her funeral Friday at St. Mary?s Catholic Church.

Mary JoAnn (Quirk) Munson, a longtime Bangor real estate agent, passed away Monday at age 81.

Jon Dawson of ERA Dawson Bradford Co., where Munson worked since 1984, said Munson was a ?natural-born salesperson.?

Munson, who was affectionately known as ?Sweet Mary Jo? by many friends and colleagues, won multiple real estate awards and was consistently ranked among the top five ERA agents in Maine. She spent much of her real estate career working alongside her husband, Don Munson.

When the two started working as a team in 1989, Dawson said it was rare to see a husband-wife team working in the industry.

The arrangement worked. In 1993, the Munsons completed 109 real estate transactions, which ERA said was the 11th most in the country.

Dawson said Munson inspired and maintained people?s confidence, making her a great saleswoman.

?She absolutely loved [her job],? Dawson said.

In 2005, ERA awarded Munson the John Harmon Lifetime Real Estate Achievement Award, the company?s highest honor.

Munson was an avid participant in theater productions, ranging from ?Lil Abner? and ?Stop the Stretcher, I Want to Get Off? to ?Driving Miss Daisy,? according to her obituary.

A 1949 John Bapst High School graduate, Munson went on to study business at what was then Husson College in Bangor, a relationship she continued for many years as a member and president of the Alumni Board of Directors.

Julie Green, director of public affairs for Husson University, said Friday that Munson played an important part in the growth of the school over the years and took pride in the university?s successes.

?She especially enjoyed meeting the students,? Green said.

In 2004, the school honored her with Husson?s Outstanding Business Alumni award, an honor she presented to her brother, Jack Quirk, the next year.

?She has been a fixture here on our campus for many years,? Green said.

Munson is survived by her husband and children, her brothers Jack and George Quirk and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
