Bora's Picks (June 28th, 2013)

When Running 200 Miles Is Easier on Your Body Than Running 100 by William Herkewitz:

After 200 miles and three straight days of running across the Northern Italian Alps, 50-year-old Gregoire Millet wearily walks across the finish line. The brutal 2012 Tor des G?ants is the second ultramarathon he has run, and by pushing his body well beyond what most would consider the brink, he takes the silver medal. He has been racing for nearly 79 hours, much of it in the rain, and has slept for only 6. He has crossed a seemingly endless stretch of rocky crags and endured 15 miles of elevation change. He is exhausted?

Cataloguing the Impact of Lindau Meetings by Kathleen Raven:

Prestigious achievements like the Nobel Prize create powerful networks. Within these networks, scientists share ideas, researchers collaborate with resources and writers cover stories. How can we monitor and measure the impact of the Lindau meetings? This is a question also for gatherings like the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, businesses like Google and institutions like the University of Oxford. Measuring the impact will require two things: first the network needs to stay connected. Second, the method of measuring impact needs to be made uniform. The network infrastructure is already in place. I propose two ideas for cataloging impact from the meeting next week?.

Bessemer update: City wants $2 million from developers by Kelly Poe:

The city of Greensboro has asked the developers of the rundown Bessemer Shopping Center on Phillips Avenue to front the $2 million they have promised before giving them a $2 million loan for renovations, said former Guilford County Commissioner Melvin ?Skip? Alston, who represents the developers?.

VIDEO: Project QueensWay: A neighborhood is divided over proposed park by Katie Hiler and Ben Guarino:

Deep in the heart of Queens is a three mile abandoned stretch of the Long Island Railroad that could soon become the borough?s newest green space ? a Highline-style park called The QueesWay. But residents are split on what the new park, if built, will do for the community. While some argue The QueensWay could benefit young families and civic organizations, others worry the park will bring undo negative attention to their sleepy neighborhoods?.

Dry ice ice baby by Jon Tennant and Jane Robb:

A new study has proposed evidence of chunks of frozen carbon dioxide sandboarding (like snowboarding, but in your shorts) down dunes on Mars, associated with the sedimentary structures we find in the remains of impact craters. Frozen carbon dioxide forms a compact seasonal layer that waxes and wanes with the temperature, and is strongly dependent on latitude. The team here, a deadly combination of planetary geoscientists and geomorphologists, propose that when the seasons change, and with it the temperature, this dry ice layer sublimates (transforms straight from a solid into a gas), fragments, and due to the sloped boundaries of crater walls, blocks flake off and topple downhill, leaving their traces in the sand before disappearing forever (well, until the next freezing season..)?

Global Crisis: Honeybee Population on the Decline by Samantha Jakuboski:

When I first watched the video to the left, I actually believed that BeABee Inc. was a legitimate corporation, but as I browsed the website and clicked on its links, I was redirected to a page that stated, ?BeABee Inc. does not really exist. But if we don?t act now, it could.? The objective of the video and the BeABee website is to gain people?s attention and open up their eyes to the decline in the honeybee population. For years, the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) population has been decreasing, and although some people may not realize it, this decline poses a major threat to global agriculture and our future. At first, I felt naive and gullible for believing the BeABee video, but after doing my research, I realized that the idea of human/hand pollination did not seem as bizarre and unlikely as it first had, and in fact, in some areas of the world, hand pollination is an everyday, normal task?.

The Evolution of Personality by Sarah Jane Alger:

The heart of science lies in existential questions such as ?Who am I?? and ?Where did I come from?? Yet somehow, these are the very questions that scientists tend to shy away from. It?s as if we?re afraid that by unraveling the mysteries of our world and ourselves, we?ll be left with nothing but a handful of yarn. But many of us see the quest for personal understanding differently ? as a journey to gain appreciation for all the complexities and rare events that came together to weave the glorious tapestry that is life. It is in this push and pull of wanting to know more while still wanting to maintain mystery that the study of personality lies. And for this reason (and many others), the science of personality has been woefully understudied and underappreciated?.

A Transparent Problem? by Josh Howgego and Victoria Druce:

In late 2010 a chemist needed a piece of glassware that didn?t exist. Stephen Hodge at Imperial College London was working on a new method for dissolving carbon nanotube anions and wanted to study his process using spectroscopy. The experiments required an inert atmosphere and two electrodes, so an ordinary cuvette wouldn?t do the job?.

Hubble?s Latest Discovery Could Change Everything We Know About How Planets Grow by Amy Shira Teitel:

Not too long ago, NASA?s Kepler Space Telescope lost a second reaction wheel. It was a crippling setback, leaving the telescope unable to get a clear view of distant stars. People were devastated when the news broke, saying we?d never find another exoplanet. But we have. Quite a few. And they are among the neater exoplanet finds?.

Printed solar cells as easy to produce as t-shirts! by Markus Hammonds:

Australia is really taking the initiative in alternative energy production. The latest news is that a consortium of Australian researchers have succeeded in producing printable solar cells, in a process which might just have the potential to revolutionise solar power production across the continent. Perhaps, we can only hope, the world?.

Lindau 2013: Videos with a Personality, Flow and Message by Kathleen Raven:

After learning about the Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau through an online science video collection, Edson Filho will now be behind the camera making films himself as a video blogger at this year?s meeting. His path to this point ? like his research in sport and exercise psychology ? can be summed up in a word: unconventional?.

Michael Jackson's nephew says singer happy in final days

By Dana Feldman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson's nephew and co-guardian to his three children testified on Thursday in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the late pop star's family that the "Thriller" singer appeared happy at a family party about month before his death in 2009.

"He was in a good mood, he was happy, making jokes," T.J. Jackson, 34, the son of Jackson 5 member Tito Jackson, told jurors in a Los Angeles courtroom about the last time he saw the self-styled "King of Pop."

"We talked primarily about the children," T.J. said. "I wanted to have more kids, so did he."

Jackson died about a month later at age 50 in Los Angeles from an overdose of surgical anesthetic propofol ahead of a run of 50 concerts in London.

T.J. said he could not gauge Jackson's health at the party, a wedding anniversary for the singer's parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson.

"I wasn't in the mentality to check him out," T.J. said, adding that Jackson wore a suit. "He seemed happy, jolly."

Jackson's 83-year-old mother, Katherine, is suing privately held AEG Live, which was promoting Jackson's "This Is It" comeback concert series in London, for negligence in hiring Dr Conrad Murray as his personal physician.

Murray was caring for the singer as he prepared for the shows and was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 for administering the propofol that killed Jackson.

T.J. is the second Jackson family member to testify in the trial. He followed Jackson's eldest son, 16-year-old Prince, who took the stand on Wednesday, four years and one day after the pop singer's death.

Jackson's nephew said he had never heard of propofol and did not know the singer was using it at the time he died.

When asked by an attorney for AEG Live if he believes Jackson was murdered, T.J. said, "I do."

'HE WAS JUST THERE FOR ME'

"He (Jackson) would tell me and my brothers that he was going to be murdered because of his position (celebrity), that he was a target," T.J. said of recurring conversations he had with Jackson from the mid-1990s to early 2000s.

AEG Live has said that Jackson had prescription drug addiction problems for years before entering into an agreement with the company and that the singer chose Murray as his physician.

AEG Live also has said it could not have foreseen that Murray posed a danger to Jackson.

T.J.'s older brother Taj, 39, also testified on Thursday, and the brothers offered a view into Jackson's private life. They described him as a humble family man who supported his family in times of need, telling jurors that he helped and comforted them after their mother was murdered in 1994.

"He kept me inspired and ambitious. He was just there for me," said T.J., who broke down in tears.

"I still feel lost sometimes without him here," Taj testified, adding that Jackson gave him moral support and helped pay for him to attend college.

T.J., who is in the R&B group 3T with Taj and a third brother, echoed Prince's testimony that Jackson's death has been hardest on the singer's teenage daughter, Paris, who has spent time in a hospital after an apparent suicide attempt this month.

"The loss of my uncle has hit her at a different level," T.J. said. "She was daddy's girl; my uncle was her world."

Paris, 15, and Jackson's youngest son, 11-year-old Prince Michael II, also known as Blanket, are not expected to testify during the trial, which began in April.

Testimony over the past two days has focused on Jackson's relationship with his children, with the family's attorneys showing home videos and photos of the pop star with his kids.

Box Office Preview: 'White House Down' and 'The Heat' Battle for second place

By Todd Cunningham

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - So who's going to win this weekend's box office showdown between openers "White House Down," with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, and "The Heat," with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock?

Would you believe "Monsters University," with Mike and Sully?

Disney-Pixar's 3D animated family film is a good bet to top them both and repeat as box office champ, bringing in around $40 million, the analysts say. That would be a roughly 50 percent drop from its $82 million opening, and would be an accomplishment given the competition.

Both Sony's action epic and Fox's female cop comedy are projected to come in at around $35 million, and Paramount's zombie thriller "World War Z" will likely have a second weekend just under that. Those movies and Warner Bros.' Superman offering "Man of Steel" will compete for the same audiences, while ?Monsters U" will have the family field to itself, and that's what gives it the edge.

Both of the openers will debut in more than 3,000 theaters, and both are buddy films, at least to a degree.

Tatum and Foxx play a cop and the President, respectively, teaming up to fight a terrorist attack in "White House," while McCarthy and Bullock are reluctant and mismatched cop partners in pursuit of a drug lord, in "The Heat."

Both have directors with significant followings and both have the potential to break out.

"The Heat" is directed by Paul Feig of "Bridesmaids," and reviews indicate it has earned its R rating with loads of the raunchy humor that made his 2011 comedy a hit. "Bridesmaids," which also featured McCarthy, took in more than $170 million at the domestic box office.

"The Heat" is at 86 percent positive on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

"The Heat" is also the summer's first - and only - major movie with two female leads. McCarthy in particular is red-hot. Her January release "Identity Thief" is still the year's highest-grossing comedy with $135 million domestically, and many critics saw her supporting turn as the best part of "The Hangover Part 3."

Online ticket broker Fandango reported Thursday that sales for "The Heat" were pacing more than 50 percent ahead of sales for "Bridesmaids" and "Identity Thief."

Roland Emmerich, who blows things up with the best of them, is the director of the PG-13-rated "White House Down." He has a track record of opening action epics big, from 2009's "2012" ($65 million) and 2004's "The Day After Tomorrow" ($68 million) to 1996's "Independence Day" ($50 million). But he's had his misses as well, including 2011's "Anonymous."

An X factor for "White House Down" is the impact of "Olympus Has Fallen," a similarly themed president-in-peril movie that has taken in nearly $100 million since March for FilmDistrict. The Facebook numbers are encouraging for Sony; "White House Down" had nearly 294,000 "likes" three days prior to its release, as compared to the 159,000 that "Olympus Has Fallen" had.

The critics aren't impressed - it's a 44 percent positive on Rotten Tomatoes - but that's never been a big factor with Emmerich movies.

On the specialty front, IFC Films is opening "Byzantium," a creepy thriller directed by Neil Jordan (TVs "The Borgias"), in six theaters across the country. Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton star in the tale of two mysterious women who seek shelter at a small-town resort.

Writer-director Pedro Almodovar's R-rated comedy "I'm So Excited" will make its limited debut for Sony Classics. The Spanish import takes place almost entirely on an airplane, and stars Javier Camara, Cecilia Roth, Lola Duenas and Raul Arevalo. Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz and Paz Vega make cameo appearances.

Tribeca Films is opening Adrian Grenier's documentary "How to Make Money Selling Drugs" in five cities this weekend. It debuted earlier this month on iTunes and Demand, and on Wednesday at the IFC Center in New York.

Written and directed by Grenier's longtime collaborator and friend Matthew Cooke, the documentary is an insider's look at the drug industry, told from the perspective of former drug dealers. It features interviews with rappers 50 Cent, Rick Ross and Russell Simmons, as well as rights advocates and filmmakers Susan Sarandon and Woody Harrelson.

How to Address a Cover Letter - Job Searching - About.com

Speaking as a former hiring manager, I dislike ?Dear Hiring Manager? since that?s not my title. My preference is for ?Dear Sir or Madam.?

What I?m writing for, though, is to emphasize that if a name is given in the advertisement, ALWAYS address the letter to that person.

I once received a letter that was obviously copied from a book. For the date, the writer typed ?Date: ______? and handwrote the date. The ad said ?reply to Dave,? and the salutation was ?Dear Hiring Manager:? (at least he properly used a colon. The first sentence was ?In response to your advertisement in the Newspaper A/Newspaper B/Newspaper C, I am applying for a position as Position A/Position B/Position C?? (newspaper names and positions not revealed hear, to help protect the ignorant; this was 20 years ago, after all). The applicant had CIRCLED the newspaper name and position title.

Needless to say, he was not considered any further. The only reason the letter didn?t go into the shredder immediately is that I kept it, without identifying information, as an example of how NOT to write a cover letter.

Just a last point for applicants to consider: if the advertisement or job posting doesn?t specifically say ?no cover letter,? write one. That was my first cut ? if I couldn?t read the letter, I didn?t care what the applicant?s technical abilities were. Whether or not it?s stated in the job description EVERY job requires communications skills.

astigmatic precast: PPC Advertising: Is It For You - Blog Cash Business

When we think about pay per click advertising for internet businesses, we just think of the advertisements appearing alongside search results. We already have this particular concept in our minds that those advertisements are just there for search engine relations reasons whenever actually, it is so much more. For a while now, pay-per-click advertising and marketing has already been one of the primary sources of traffic driven to websites. For internet companies, brand name awareness and driving traffic to their website to collect leads in addition to generate sales is a considerable factor for their success. Nevertheless, all over the Internet, we have seen that this type of advertising is actually popular not necessarily because of its ease-of-use, however also because of its success.

With regards to internet business generally speaking, having fantastic brand name awareness by using PPC advertising may mean the real difference in between success plus failing. Whenever people understand exactly what your business has to offer, they can then compare and also analyse the reason why your business may be much better than your competition.

Utilising this kind of advertising successfully will provide you with the advantage by allowing your product or service to stick out in front of a large area of the market you?re trying to attract. Even though brand name awareness is significant to the success of an online business, there happen to be several other things which should end up being considered as well.

Driving traffic to your own online business is vital if perhaps your own goal is to produce leads and sales for your product or service. Simply by collecting leads for your own product, you are giving yourself the ability to re-market to them at some point. For example when you produce a new product or even are partnering with some other related companies.

With enough leads collected, you may then begin driving sales towards your service, which obviously, should be your main goal in this matter. Pay-per-click advertising along with product fulfilment go hand in hand in the event that you truly wish to provide your clients or customers an excellent experience. Regardless of whether you need to collect leads or perhaps produce product sales for your internet business, pay per click advertising has been a established and trustworthy technique to get the job done.

Knowing the marketing uses of PPC advertising for online businesses may enable you to be able to scale up your business efficiently without the extra costs integrated onto your spending budget. Because this sort of advertising may be easy even for a beginner, having a wide range of staff running your campaigns is not required for you to observe key results.

Knowing who your target market is, exactly what they?re seeking, and taking note of their buying patterns may certainly assist you in your own pay per click campaigns because it may enable you to close out any unneeded or unrelated traffic sources from landing onto your own product page. With that said, there are usually numerous PPC networks out there which will allow you to start marketing your product currently. Research which of them match your service best and start utilizing the features they have to provide

PPC Advertising is just one way to achieve Internet visibility. Local Gold Coast businesses should in addition think about listing their website with a free Gold Coast business directory. To see more information check this out.
